After 116 LA bands entered, MTV Tr3s selected the 3 nominees below from your your top 20 ranked artists to open the VMA concert at Six Flags Magic Mountain on August 1st. Estos artistas will battle it out in front of a celebrity panel of judges including former Descubre & Download cantante Kat Deluna y los reggaetoneros Alexis y Fido, who will announce el ganador en vivo!
La Banda Skalavera was named this year’s Best Breakout LA Artist and was featured on MTV during the live VMAs locally on Time Warner Cable and will be showcased nationally on MTV tr3s!
With 11 members in total, La Banda Skalavera use their riff heavy horns, tight rhythm section, and highly evident musicianship to seamlessly concoct a mixture of Caribbean and Ska stylings that will have you grooving the night away. But there’s more. Lyrically, the band's real life experiences are fodder for social commentary.
At some point in the year 2000, Metal and Punk got in a brawl with Latin and produced the South Central Skankers. Opposing influences are sure to inspire musical transformations, but the fact that the band is capable of connecting those influences so flawlessly comes as a killer surprise. Their lengthy recipe for a perfect Ska show includes mullet wigs, tacos, red stripe, and 8 of your best songs. Need we say more?
Spanglish Punk. That’s how these LA rockers describe their genre. And with such an even combination of American and Mexican influences, we’re not sure there’s a much better label to describe them!
