In 2001, James Spooner began filming every black punk he could find and turned his footage into a seminal look at black punks in America. His film, Afro-Punk, began as an exploration, but has grown into a social statement, a musical genre and a strong and growing community of influencers.
The Afro-Punk weekend takes a solid look at notions of race, class, politics and more, all under a structure of music, film and revolution.
More punk/alternative hip-hop/hardcore/rock bands than ever feature members from two or more races. Skate and punk elements are cropping up with increasing frequency in Hip-Hop culture. And Afropunk.com members and fans are global – from America and Europe to Asia and Africa.
