About Sky Held Sun
Inspired by John Lennon, John Bennett has been writing songs since a kid, while always dreaming of being a Beatle. He spent many years traveling and surfing remote areas of the world, which led him to live in Hawaii, Australia & New Zealand for a spell. Honest, sincere while sometimes haunting vocals and distinctive song arrangements are the hallmark of John’s writing, which tend to be heart on sleeve with melodies you just can’t get out of your head. After returning to his home of San Diego, John met kindred spirit Jim Volkert and instantly Jim's Harrison/Clapton-esque guitar melodies provided a beautiful counterpoint to John's dark and poignant lyrics. Countless gigs as a duo later around Encinitas and beyond, a solo LP in the works by Bennett with Jim handling guitar duties (due out '08), John and Jim met local pro drummer Joe Hager and found the backbone to their singing and strumming. Three months later, a chance encounter resulted in the addition of Mike Clairmont, and his solid bass playing to the equation. Since that point, the four have been constantly in-demand in and around San Diego, stage-testing new material mostly at their local Le Papagayo and 1st Street Bar, while tightening up the hinges for the highly anticipated debut EP, just released in May (recorded during the Witch Creek Fires at Exum Studios and had to be evacuated mid-session - luckily the studio was left unscathed). With tours up the West Coast this winter & down to Cabo in the works, the future is bright for these four shining stars; you could say as brightly & surely as the sky holds the sun....
