About Shosha Capps

Portrait of Shosha Capps
"I've seen and heard Shosha Capps several times in several venues--what a great performer she is! Her voice is haunting, and her subtle accompaniment on acoustic is just right for those clean melodies and poetic lyrics...Shosha is clearly a professional of the first order."
-Paul Allen, Pulitzer nominated poet

"Shosha Capps seems to love Tegan And Sara and Iron And Wine, influenced by the former’s melodic vocals and the latter’s hushed simplicity."
-CMJ New Music Report, July 2008

"Shosha's off to a wonderful start. She's a strong performer. I was not at first. I didn't have Shosha's poise. I really admire that in her."
-Dar Williams, Razor and Tie recording artist

Shosha (pronounced like "Sasha") was born and raised in a small town in South Carolina, which she traded for a slightly larger one at the age of 16 to attend a public boarding school for science and math. She didn't end up learning excessive amounts of math, but she did start her first band with her calculus teacher on drums. She has since wandered far from her roots, living in various US cities and foreign countries, including Spain, the Netherlands, England, and Argentina.

Shosha's upcoming album - her first full length solo recording - was recorded both in Charleston, SC, and Buenos Aires, Argentina, and exhibits a broader musical range than her previous work. While Shosha's music is best categorized as part of the recent folk revival in indie pop, her experimental structures and vivid lyrical imagery have also drawn comparisons outside of the musical realm to modernist poets such as e.e. cummings and William Carlos Williams.

Although she eventually plans to return to the Southeastern US, Shosha will be based in Northern California, where she is pursuing a master's degree in International Agricultural Development, for the next year. She likes the cherry trees and misses the thunder.
Birthdate: January 4

Today feels a little bit like Christmas. It’s hard to say why. The wind is loud and steady and the sun is bright and yellow and it’s the first really cold day of the year. And by really cold, let’s be clear that I live in California – it was maybe 50 degrees or so. Anyway, last night I pulled my electric blanket out of the closet, and though I am not sure where I packed away my winter clothes, I have decided it is definitely time to find them.

This morning A. and M. and I went to the police bike auction, and then got completely overwhelmed and confused and left before bidding even started. We were pretty sure all the hundreds of people there were going to be bidding on the same 5 bikes, and it turned out that if you missed the viewing period (which w...

Hi Shosha - Thanks for listening to my music and your comments. You have a lovely voice. Yes, we are neighbors of sort. Davis is about an hour away from me. I've been to the UC Davis many times. My drummer attends as well as several other HS friends. If you haven't already, you should check out Cool as Folk. Michael puts on awesome shows in Davis and on KDVS. http://www.myspace.com/coolasfolk

Hello Shosha!! Thank you for the very nice comments. And thanks so much for becoming a fan! You obviously were doing some reading to know about that "canadian prairie scene" reference on my page. The prairie years were certainly my "training" period. Being there (in a traveling band) in the harsh winter was a "boot camp" of sorts. I relocated to Canada's mild west coast some years ago and have now become a woos where the weather's concerned. Anyway,...Jeeze!!...you certainly have some impressive awards posted on your page. Congratulations!! Obviously a lot of other people besides me are very impressed with you and your work. Keep going!! ALSO... best of luck with your agricultural studies. Soon you'll be able to return to the cherry trees and thunder. I like thunder too. Especially loud boisterous PRAIRIE THUNDER. Hey... that would be a good name for a band.
