About sbenoit
Steve Benoit
Born and raised in rural Northern Ontario, Steve began his musical journey at a very young age singing Elvis songs when he was around 4-5 years old. He grew up listening to his grandfather and uncles play country and bluegrass songs at family gatherings. He started playing in a band in highschool when he became the singer based on the fact that he knew the words to a few songs. In college he played bass in a punk band and eventually took over on vocals. During this time Steve went to a Teenage Fanclub concert in Toronto and the opening act was a little known band from Missouri called Uncle Tupelo. From that moment his musical direction took a hard turn. After college he moved to California where he began writing and performing his own material in the Americana vein. He lived and played around sonoma county while soaking up the ocean air and the wild san fransisco nights. There he stayed for 4 years before moving to Nashville, Tn in 1998. He has released one full length record in 2001 (Where I Belong) , an EP in 2003 (Sketches of a Small Town) and is getting ready to release his first full length with his band. His influences come from a long line of Canadian singer-songwriters steeped in roots music. His love of rock n roll, soul, folk, and even a little R&B can be heard in his music. His new record 'Whatever Happened to the Drive ins?'will be out in the spring of '07. Steve has just completed the National Broadway tour 'Ring of Fire' The Music of Johnny Cash that took him to over 100 cities and played over 150 shows. He'll be back in Nashville performing again with and without his band
