Meet David Gillespie - a 20-something singer/songwriter who’s readily becoming a household name. Residing in Fitzroy, Melbourne, Gillespie started out travelling from bar to bar sharing his music with anyone willing to listen. Today, he’s found himself sitting back and watching audiences grow bigger every time he performs.
Although he was born in Australia, Gillespie spent most of his childhood in Hong Kong and America. The result? A messed up accent, a well-rounded cultural view and an undeniable flair for universal music. Today he is based in Australia and performs with a 5-piece line up including drums, bass, acoustic and electric guitar and, one of Gillespie’s most notable musical features, saxophone.
Spouting influences from Springsteen to Prince, David Gray to Dave Matthews, the product is a diverse mix of styles that seamlessly blend from rock to acoustic and which Gillespie is quite happy to simply label "pop".
"I don't get precious about the comparisons, the labelling,” he said. “Compare me to whoever you want. If it means someone takes the time to request a song on radio or buy a CD because they heard I sound like such-and-such, so be it.” He’s even happy to be compared to James Blunt…”as long as you add ‘with a pulse!” he laughs.
Having played gigs up and down the East Coast over the last few years, the release of his first single marks the beginning of a new phase of his musical career. “As soon as I'd written it I knew it would be my first single,” he said about the hit Roll To Me. “It's tempting to downplay it, but you always know when a good one has just popped out…I knew something special had happened.”
Gillespie’s music is instantly familiar, yet not quite like anything you've heard before, and we dare you not to be singing along by the time the second chorus comes around. Gillespie’s debut album Out In The Real World will be released in Mid 2008.
