Colin Cannon: Guitarist / Improvisor / Composer
Guitarist/Improviser/Composer Colin Cannon draws from many musical genres to create his unique style of contemporary jazz. The sound is laced with subtle Eastern influences and contemporary rhythms like funk, hip-hop, and drum 'n bass; with original compositions that range from the most delicate of whispers to the most violent of screams. Cannon's music is not only enjoyed by Jazz fans, but is also widely accepted by Jam Band, Fusion, Blues, and even Blue Grass audiences.
Cannon grew up in Rochester, N.Y. where he first picked up the guitar at age nine. At thirteen, Cannon began his formal studies with Steve Greene, a local jazz celebrity and famous music instructor (www.SteveGreene.com). Greene mentored Colin for the next seven years and a solid friendship continues to this day.
At age 15, Cannon began studying at the Eastman School of Music with professor Bob Snieder. During his four years at Eastman, Cannon focused on Jazz as well as some Classical guitar, and performed multiple times at the school’s Kilborn Hall. The school went on to name Colin the “Fred V. Alati Jazz Scholar”
By the time Cannon was 16, he was making a name for himself locally. While still in High School, Cannon opened (on solo guitar) for such artists as, Grammy-nominees Karrin Allyson and Brian Auger. Brian Auger was quoted saying, "we can all be sure to hear of Colin in the near future."
In 2002, the Berklee College of Music’s “World Scholarship Tour” awarded Cannon with a merit scholarship to the prestigious school. That year alone, the tour had auditioned potential recipients all throughout the United States, Mexico, South America, Europe, South Africa, and much of Asia. Cannon began his studies at Berklee in 2003.
While in college, Cannon was lucky to study with one of his favorite guitarists, Tim Miller. He also took “Advanced Guitar” with the legendary Mick Goodrick (teacher of Pat Metheny, John Scofield, Wolfgang Schalk…). After four years, he graduated in 2007. In response to Cannon's final concert at the College, Steve Greene was quoted as saying, "Colin's music has become a true statement of 21st century guitar."
Cannon is currently based as a Guitar instructor in Boston, but frequently plays in New York City. A tour is expected this summer, hitting venues in the United State's northeast; also performances at multiple festivals are in the works. As Cannon's reputation continues to grow in the U.S., he's also gaining significant recognition (on line) from listeners in Europe, and most recently, Cannon's song "The Berklee Cage" was voted #1 in jazz (out of 200) by fans on www.OurStage.com
Within 2008, Cannon's music is expected to be in select stores in the U.S. and internationally available on itunes. In the meantime you can find him at www.myspace.com/ColinCannonMusic
