Vigalantee, a rapper, speaker, and social activist based in Kansas City, Kansas, released his third album, A.N.I.M.A.L., last year. The album contains tracks with positive messages and keen-eyed commentary, cuts ready for the club, spoken-word poetry, and edgy rap. The music and messages express the diverse approach Vigalantee and his guests take to entertain, inform, and inspire listeners.
PRESENT: What does A.N.I.M.A.L. mean? Why choose this title?
Vigalantee: A Nation in Misery Alienated and Lost. You have to be in misery to kill and think your way is the only way. Drugs, child abuse, disrespect for diversity, and racism truly alienates us from being united, so we stay lost.
PRESENT: What are you trying to achieve on this new album in message and spirit?
Vigalantee: I’m trying to change the perception of hip hop and use its power to uplift and encourage change for all. It is the next step for the No Jaangle movement.
PRESENT: Do you think there’s a backlash in media and society against the negative imagery and themes in mainstream hip hop?
Vigalantee: Yes, indeed! The money is good short-term, but it kills hip hop inside out, because there is no balance. It’s all one sided. The powers that be don’t want you to think rap can heal and encourage real change.
PRESENT: What songs on the album share your message about the community you live in?
Vigalantee: “Suspended in Time,” “Bars Freestyle, Part 2,” “Worth More than Gold,” “A.N.I.M.A.L..”
PRESENT: Tell us about the guests on A.N.I.M.A.L.
Vigalantee: Shado is an ill singer that’s real smooth in his delivery. Tiffany Sipple gives us that female perspective and she smashes the point on “Worth More than Gold.” Propper, my ace, is an activist shining on “Grit Grind, Part 1.” I got the heavy weights, Tooth Pic, Chauncey, and Clyde bringing the streets in on the album. C. Cullins is a young poet on the rise who performs “Animals are Ignorant.” Concept and Sophomore “Flo Ready” are the next stage of real hip-hop.
PRESENT: You mix it up on this release with some spoken-word poetry and other forms of expression. What inspired this blend?
Vigalantee: I wanted to express my point in every different style to keep your attention and do something groundbreaking instead of the same ole tired song and dance.
PRESENT: What else should people know about Vigalantee?
Vigalantee: This is my life and my message to the world. I am cool cat with a desire for life and a loving father who wants better future for lil’ Rog and Jazmine. Go get the album and support something that’s real.
