Soul Retrieval” by Tony Vani and Debbie Hoskin is a refreshingly eclectic and inspiring album that spans various genres including adult contemporary and adult rock. Emerging out of bitter loss and tragedy, “Soul Retrieval” seeks to heal broken hearts and immortalize the memories of lost loved ones. This CD achieves these goals using heart-felt lyrics that venture into fond memories of the past and hopeful reunions of the future. Backed by skillful instrumentation, passionate vocals, and memorable melodies, these tunes take on a life of emotions that strikes at the hearts strings. “Shout It Right Out Loud” demonstrates the heavy emotional atmosphere these tunes carry, while flaunting beautiful three-part harmonies. Debbie Hoskin explains the process of soul retrieval: reclaiming all the pieces of your soul after it has been shattered by devastating trauma. In November of 2004 Debbie lost her son, Jason, 23, in a tragic car accident. A short time later her husband, Roger, 50, suffered a relapse and died of brain cancer. "Roger dealt with the exhausting effects of a brain tumor for over 10 years, but he simply could not survive the loss of our son," says Debbie. It has been a very painful process," Debbie explains, "When two policemen showed up at my door early one morning and told me my son was gone, I felt my soul shatter into a billion pieces. Parts of my soul splattered all over the universe, leaving a mere fragment of myself standing there. From that point on I was so numb and disconnected from losing Jason that I walked around like a zombie while Roger was dying in front of me. “Soul retrieval” means embracing all of those painful places deep inside and calling them back together; screaming, crying, raging and allowing the grief flow through you. It means trusting that the only way out, is through." Debbie, Roger, and good friend, Tony Vani, have played in various bands together for over 20 years. Both Debbie and Tony began to channel their pain by writing lyrics, which Tony put to music, and together they wove the tapestry, Soul Retrieval. Soul Retrieval is an eclectic mixture of spiritually inspired songs - rock, jazz, blues, even a hint of reggae, lively and upbeat, and some ballads. It speaks the pain and anger of grief, but mostly of hope and inspiration. With the help of friends and fellow musicians, Vitas Slapkauscaus, Duncan Cooper, Dan Bone and Gary Hagan, the CD was recorded at Sa Tune Da Ga Studio in Tyendinaga. It is dedicated to Roger and Jason, and a portion of the proceeds from sales will support the Canadian Cancer Society. Kate Everson 25.MAY.07 Belleville - Everybody knows somebody. There is no one that cancer has not touched. Debbie Hoskin knows all too well. She lost her husband to brain cancer last summer, just a year after her son died in a car crash. She decided to dedicate a CD to both of them. The launch of Soul Retrieval will be June 9 at the Ramada in a CD release party from 8:30 p.m.to 12:30 a.m. The performers will also sing on stage at the Relay for Life from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on June 22 at Loyalist where all the proceeds from their CD will go to cancer research. “The part that I miss most of all was losing my best friend,” Debbie says of her husband Roger Sabo who sang with her in bands for 20 years. She notes that her son Jason, 23, was also a musician, so it is appropriate that music is the way to best remember and honour them. The pop/rock CD was put together with Tony Vani, a long-time band member with both Debbie and Roger, most recently in The Stir. Together they wrote the lyrics and music. Some other musicians on the CD were Vitas Slapkauscaus on bass, Duncan Cooper on keyboard, Gary Hagan on bass, Dan Bone on saxophone. It was recorded at a studio in Tyendinaga. The songs are upbeat and magical, with lyrics that move you. One song was taken from lyrics written by Roger in his basement and transposed into new music. A secret track is an actual recording of the original. Debbie explains how the title Soul Retrieval got its name, using a shamanic term about the healing process after a devastation in one’s life. “Your soul shatters,” she says. “Time does not heal it. You just have to learn how to live in constant emotional pain.” One song called Sleepwalker describes how “when we die, we wake up.” Debbie feels that one day she will see her loved ones again, in another plane of existence. “I will see them again,” she says. “This is just a drama
