So many new artists that break through claim in all of their press that their sound is different and unique somehow yet when you hear their album it truly sounds just like everything else. The case with Franklin, TN based Stillhouse Hollow is that they’re truly unique for today’s era of music. With “Dakota,” their first release for Me and the Machine Records, you instantly are transported back to yesterday’s folk era as “Path” pulls you into the album. The recording is raw and rough around the edges throughout the cut making you feel as if it was recorded in someone’s living room adding a certain degree of charm to the production. The good news for fans of the obscure recordings like this one is that Stillhouse Hollow never strays away from this initial sound throughout the album. Odd instrumentation plays along with an unmixed quality allowing the vocals to be a bit more in the front making the lyric the true focus of the album. While some bands claim to have influence from the past, Stillhouse Hollow seems to be living in it. This is edgy in its own way as it takes risks through its obscure instrumentation and usage of instruments not commonly heard. They offer listeners a chance to hear a stripped down sound with raw qualities that combines extremely talented musicianship and songwriting throughout. This sounds like an album you’d find in your grandma’s attic and discover for the first time. Great job capturing the sound they were going for and well worth a spin if you like something that takes chances and stretches boundaries.

The fellows in Franklin, Tennessee’s Stillhouse Hollow play subtle, melodic, soft pop with hints of country and bluegrass threaded into the mix. The band consists of Nathan Griffin, Joel Meeks, Jess Perkins, and Scott Calpin. At a point in time when everyone under the sun is trying so desperately hard to sound unusual and different, the songs on Dakota are a refreshing change of pace because these guys seem to be taking the exact opposite approach. Instead of relying on technology to create what the public is accustomed to hearing, these guys use traditional instruments to create songs that are simple and yet ultimately very entertaining. This album is all about songs…and there’s not a bad apple to be found here. These twelve tracks are sparse and smooth…and the music truly sounds like it is coming straight from the heart. These timeless tunes can be appreciated by everyone from teenagers to folks in their eighties and beyond. Nice relaxing cuts include “Path,” “Goosebumps,” “Can’t Take My Love,” and “Whiskey.” Cool and very, very smooooooth… (Rating: 5)

If Trevor Alguire is rootsy, Tennessee band Stillhouse Hollow is downright lo-fi. Their signature sound has a ragged charm, acoustic and old-timey, with banjo, mandolin, harmonica, and upright bass more prominent than guitar. The clear, light-spirited vocals from primary songwriter Nathan Griffin and the boys have a youthful simplicity with just enough quaver to convince. Standouts: “Strollin’ In,” which suggests the Byrds’ country period; the jaunty “Painfully True”; and the silly, sad-eyed "Pimp Hand.
