The beginning of the path for M.U.U. by Midwest Music Society
Hailing from the Twin Cities, Mercury Upon Us is a self-described progressive rock/pre-modern post punk band. Making up this admittingly walking contradiction is Kris Reuter on vocals and rhythm guitar, Mike Hanson, guitar, Brandon Cornwell, drums, and Aaron Holm, aka The Nooge, bass. Mercury Upon Us came from a song title from a band Mike & Kris had been playing in together that had no real meaning what so ever. Over the last year that the band has been in existence, the name has evolved into meaning something different to each individual. Out of nothing, came something. For Mike it’s a reminder to not take things for granted, as a few years ago he literally had a Mercury on top of him when he, along with a few close friends, got in a horrible car accident. The way they describe their sound, they admit, is an oxymoron. It’s different but familiar, goofy but hardcore, fast paced with a melodic twist. There’s something for everyone with Mercury Upon Us, having been described by others as a hardcore Foo Fighters and a more meaningful Weezer. You can hear influences of punk rock; jam bands and progressive metal within their music. The origins of the band go back about a decade ago when Brandon and Mike played together in high school. That band dissolved before high school even ended but they remained friends. Kris moved from Iowa in 2007 and met Mike through a craigslist ad; the friendship between them was instant. All members played in various projects before meeting one another, and on the first snowfall in 2009, Mike decided to get serious. He saw huge potential in the chemistry they all shared. Mike describes jam sessions with The Nooge as telekinetic, each vibing off of one another. Which is why when The Nooge was going through some personal matters, the band waited for him. They tried out other bassists but a link was missing, the band was moving forward but they weren’t going anywhere. When he came back almost three months later, it was as if he had never left and everyone knew this was the group they wanted to proceed with. Each member plays multiple instruments, which is what makes their creative process so rewarding. Kris writes most of the lyrics but they all will bring something to the table, sometimes surprising each other with how well their different lyrics go together. It is an individual and collaborative process. The highs and lows, the beautiful and the ugly, the valleys and the peaks, the emotions of relationships is where Kris is currently drawing his inspiration. He also touches on spiritual angst, having grown up in a religious background. The band has drawn each member closer to one another, Kris and Brandon now being roommates. Mike credits the success of this band above all the other projects they’ve worked on to the chemistry between them all.......
