For the Birds is a musical collective comprised of three seasoned female singer-songwriters. Presenting their songs in an “in the round” format, these talented musicians blend their voices to create soulful harmonies and back each other up on guitar and percussion. The young women met through an online competition to play on Sarah McLachlan's Lilith tour. All of them ranked in the top six of the Vancouver contest and each performer brings to the stage her own unique style and range. This year's tour presents Aspen Switzer, Elaine Ryan and Genevieve Rainey. Kim McMechan (www.kimmcmechan.com), a founding collective member, will be joining them for several shows. Aspen Switzer is a Nelson-based singer-songwriter whose second album, Humble but Bearing No Apology, won best Folk/Traditional Recording of the Year and best Roots/Word Recording of the Year at the 2009 BC Interior Music Awards. Since releasing her first CD in 2006 Aspen has performed for audiences from Victoria to Charlottetown. She’s played diverse venues, Fringe festivals and music festivals including the Salmon Arm Roots and Blues festival. Back from her first cross-Canada tour Elaine Ryan is making waves with her second album, Songs from the River. Elaine was shortlisted for Vancouver Shore 104 FM’s summer song contest this year, earning her coveted commercial radio play. She has won songwriting contests, played at an independent TED talk, busked across Europe, and played at festivals in Austin, Montreal, Toronto, Maui and B.C. She was recently featured on Vancouver's Shaw TV. Genevieve Rainey has been dazzling audiences since her teenage year playing clubs in Montreal. She writes songs like a cowgirl lassoes a wayward calf. You can almost hear her chasing an idea around the muddy corral of thought, wrapping her mind around its legs and dragging it home for dinner. Genevieve won first runner up in the 10th Annual Canadian Music Week National Songwriting contest. All three are ecstatic to be joining forces for their upcoming May/June tour! We hope you'll join us!
