About Carolyn Bagur

Carolyn's ministry CR91 is based between Baton Rouge and New Orleans in Covington, La.

Carolyn has been a junior and senior high choral director for 15 years. She currently teaches at Ponchatoula High School and graduated from Louisiana College in 1994 with a degree in Vocal Music Education. A member of LMEA, MENC,ACDA,ASCAP, GMA. Carolyn also teaches private voice and piano lessons. She also is active in the music ministry at Church of the King in Mandeville, LA, where her and her husband host New Song Cafe on the third month at St. John's Coffee house in Covington, LA . Carolyn's voice has allowed her to sing all over the US and the world. including Carnegie Hall and Moscow, Russia.

Carolyn has grown up with Contemporary Christian Music, listening to WBSN 89.1 LifeSongs fm radio. The song "More Power to Ya." by Petra turned her on to Christian music and how it can have a positive impact on your daily living. She started playing piano at the age of seven and playing in churches at age nine. As a high school music teacher she sees how influential music is on each of our lives and loves introducing positive music to her students and audience.

The CR91 music ministry is based on building strong relationships and helping others on their journey in life through music. Loving relationships is what God put us here for. Carolyn & her husband Brian are passionate about sharing their story how God can restore relationships and bless people more than we can imagine. She believes that God has an awesome plan for our lives, and when we submit to that plan, He will truly bless us. As Rick Warren states in the Purpose Driven Life, "Relationships are what life is all about."

Through building strong relationships, the ministry will help others know that being a good person is not fully what the Christian life is all about. It's about grace, love and taking what you've learned to heart (listen to Carolyn's personal story about that in her song, "Take it to Heart"). "You can know all about God, without really knowing God" is one of her favorite statements. This is what God's Higher Call is - to know God and have strong loving relationships. Listen to her song "By Your Side" that is about relationships. There is no relationship that is strained today that might seem failed that is beyond restration with God.

Carolyn with her husband Brian is CR91 and are available to speak and perform for events.

If you visit the Southeast Louisiana area you are more than welcome to be Carolyn's guest at her church at Church of the King in Mandeville, LA . Go to www.churchoftheking.com for directions and service times.

One on One: Carolyn- Singer /Songwriter

Many on the northshore know Carolyn Russell as the energetic choral director at Ponchatoula High School, or perhaps as the past-seven-years choral director at Fontainebleau High or as founder of the “Higher Call Music Ministry.” But many more will soon know her as a successful contemporary Christian recording artist. Her single “Unworthy,” from her debut, self-titled CD recorded in Nashville last year, recently was released to more than 1,000 radio stations across the country and is climbing its way up the charts. Carolyn resides in Ponchatoula with her children, Michael, 10, and Rebekah, 6, who are budding musicians focused on the violin, piano and voice.

What musical acts had a big influence on you as a young person?

I grew up in the church, and started playing in church services when I was 7! Hymns had a big influence on my life, but then, as a young teenager, I discovered contemporary Christian music and fell in love with the Christian rock group Petra. I also followed Amy Grant and Michael W. Smith heavily.

How would you describe your sound?

Well, it depends on what song; each is different. People tell me I sound like a cross between Norah Jones and Sara Groves mixed with Kelly Clarkson and Cheryl Crow.

How do your students influence your work in the recording industry?

Music is extremely powerful and sometimes controversial. Often teens will understand a message through music more than if adults tell it to them a thousand times. I considered my overall sound with [my students] in mind. I know not every teenager will like my music, but I wanted the sound [to] draw many teens to it. I am finding out that even though most of my ministry is for women, teenagers are loving it!

How does it feel to know that companies like iTunes, Verizon Wireless, and Sony all have your songs available to the public?

Well, I got my first royalty check for a whopping $2.02 the other day and was so excited! It’s satisfying knowing that songs that took so many hours to create and had so many musicians who worked on them are actually being heard by people. The messages in each song are very powerful, and I’m excited that they’re finally getting out after many obstacles!

What have been your favorite northshore venues?

I’ve performed for various organizations like the Restoration House, churches and festivals, but my favorites are the concerts I’ve done with Chick-fil-A in the Hammond Square Mall. Before and after those concerts I’ve had the opportunity to talk to the audience, each time building new relationships.

You made it to the second round in the Gospel Dream Vocal Competition at the House of Blues last year. What was that like?

That competition is like the Christian version of American Idol! For me, it was a memorable experience because I auditioned two days before Katrina hit. I auditioned and then had to wait several hours before the first-round results were released. I drove all over New Orleans, kind of killing time. Little did I know that I was seeing the city for my last time as we knew it then. I was selected to go to the second round auditions the next day, but with everyone evacuating, I couldn’t get to the southshore. Maybe the next time they come to New Orleans for auditions, there won’t be a hurricane coming for the city!

Carolyn will be signing copies of her CD November 4 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Barnes and Noble in Mandeville. Check out www.carolynrussell.org for an updated listing of her upcoming performances.

TOP NOTCH CD

...
Bagur recently completed a compact disc of Christian music.
...
PONCHATOULA , Carolyn Bagur still remembers how she felt when, in high school, her choir director asked her to sing.

"I didn't want to do it," Bagur recalled."But, I did sing for him."

Times have definitely changed.

Today, Bagur is the choral director at Ponchatoula High School, and is set to release her newest compact disc next month.

"My whole life is going to start again , a new family, new marriage and a new CD," Bagur said as she explained the transformation of her life, her reasons for singing and the evolution of what she calls her music ministry.

"The music ministry is based on building strong relationships and helping others on their journey in life through music," Bagur said.

"Loving relationships is what God put us here for," she states on her Web site.

Although she grew up listening to contemporary Christian music, and began playing the piano at age 7, it was hearing "More Power to Ya," by Petra, that inspired Bagur to perform Christian music.

In 2003, Bagur hired vocal coach Chris Beatty.
...
"I trained to get better, not to release a CD," Bagur said."I had no intentions of that. It's something I wanted to do in college , be a contemporary music singer but I didn't have the time to do it and no help."

After meeting with producer Eric Copeland, Bagur slowly began to put her CD together.
...
"When I was first recording I loved it," Bagur said of the small, private recording studio in Nashville."It was an awesome experience."

The following year, Bagur wrote the remaining songs for the CD and developed her ministry.

In 2005, Bagur released her first three songs "Unworthy," "Because He Loves Me," and "Forsaken" under the name Carolyn Russell; and recorded the tracks for the remaining songs with renowned guitarist Tom Hembey, bass guitarist Jackie Street and percussionist Steve Breuster.
