On Sunday, take a breath, go Unplugged
With economic uncertainty consuming most Americans' minds, there's a need for welcomed distractions.
And that makes Sunday's six-hour festival "Unplugged," at Gillespie Park in Sarasota, an event sure get people's minds off failing banks and trillion-dollar bailouts.
"With the financial crisis, it's good to have fun things to help people relax," said Valerie Wadsworth, event organizer for the Gillespie Park Neighborhood Association.
"It shows that we can do something ... we don't have to sit and cry about it."
And what festival organizers are doing about it is setting up two stages that will feature 10 musical acts, as well as host a "People's Choice" brownie contest and vintage Volkswagen car show.
Festivities for the free event at 710 N. Osprey Ave., a benefit for local radio station WSLR (96.5-FM), begin a noon.
Singer-songwriter Brian Fortner was invited by the radio station and said he's inspired by the effort to bring the community together.
"It's a wonderful idea, promoting community awareness, wellness and peace," said the 2007 Riverview High School graduate who will perform along with the Natural Blend Band, Lounge Cat, Tuk'r Hill and others.
"There's so many things going on with the economy, it's good to know that you're not alone," added the 19-year-old.
