About Atlanta Red

I am a Georgia native, born in southeast Georgia, west of Savannah. I finished my bachelor’s degree at Georgia State University, majoring in business. During that time, opportunities seemed to be endless for minorities in the Atlanta area. I lived in the heart of Atlanta for the first few years and later moved to west-metro Atlanta to begin planning to build a future family of my own. I’m still planning…
The name, “Atlanta Red,” was actually birthed while I was temporarily relocated to the state of New York for almost four years. The first time my words touched a mic was at the Society Coffee Café in Harlem. I was also a featured poet at the Afrikan Poetry Theatre (ShowOff Entertainment) in Jamaica Queens, NY. I returned to metro Atlanta in July of 2008 to start all over again in a new market before I could make it to the Apollo, ironically to my professional beginning.
“Atlanta” is the place that I reflected upon as “home” while I was away from some of my closest friends and family members. “Red” is my favorite color. The name is not to be misinterpreted as being “regionally-specific”. It is as nationally and internationally applicable as Orlando Jones. My poetry is dynamic and so is the name, “A.R.”
I co-founded the poetry organization, 7Poets1Name (7/1), on July 1st 2007. The team of poets originally consisted of 7 “lead poets” whose mission is to inspire others through the gift of poetry. The organization spans from various locations across the east coast of the United States to the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. September 15th, 2007 marked the day that my first two CDs were released, “My Love My Poetry” and “The Aspirations of Atlanta Red.” I personally arranged, wrote, recorded, designed, and produced each of the CDs. I also founded the online community, Say It in Poetry, soon after having been recognized and featured on the Michael Baisden Show. Recognizing a need to support the art of spoken word as a whole, S.I.P. exists to attract new fans and listeners towards the “entire art” of spoken word. My first book release under the pen name, “Atlanta Red,” is scheduled for release in April 2009. The book will be released through my co-owned publishing brand in conjunction with RDM media.
Today, you can find me promoting S.I.P., working with my 7Poets1Name family, launching a new CD with my band (and family), Stillmore Memphis Bama Jam, and preparing to launch my own weekly performance event in Atlanta beginning in February 2009. I am also warming up to Atlanta at a variety of scheduled events where I am a featured artist. Check my calendar often.
I also do graphics design as a “hobby.” Visit my graphics design site at ARIgraphics.com to see some of my work there.
I write and speak with one primary goal – to allow myself to honestly hear what the inner me needs to say to myself and to others. I love what I do because in all that I do, I’m conscious of the fact that I am sharing “me.”
