About Alycea & The Moon Dogs

Alycea is a New York City based singer-songwriter who was born 22 years ago during a blizzard on the White Mountain Apache Indian Reservation in Arizona. She arrived early and her Dad was in Alaska at the time tracking moose and starting a Public Radio station. One of his snowshoes broke on the way to the airport so he missed the whole thing. Luckily, her Mom was there so it all worked out. Alycea spent her early summers in Alaska where she was introduced to the exotic delicacies of warm raw moose liver and rural Alaska Pubic Radio. As a result she's still a vegetarian to this day and has a very eclectic taste in music. Soon her folks, who had been living on the far edge of the middle of nowhere for quite a few years, decided a change was needed and moved to New York City. This was fine by little Alycea. Leaving Apaches, moose tracking and public radio behind, the family took up residence in the big apple and immersed themselves in the high culture and frantic desperation of Fun City, as NYC was known in the late 80’s.

Alycea got her love of mystical philosophy from her Dad's side of the family. Her grandfather achieved cosmic consciousness in the early 1960's and was awarded a Zero by his fellow Beamers while living on a ranch near Leon Springs, Texas. He went on to establish Camp Eo-Wa-Ta in western Iowa where you can still find to this day a 50-foot concrete replica of Devil's Tower, an imitation Old Faithful, a fake cave and a huge geodesic dome within which he would explain to visitors the evolutionary creation of the universe. Meanwhile, her grandmother accidentally initiated telepathic contact with a strange cabal called the Vibrators and spent the rest of her days saving the world from their dastardly influence. Her Mom’s side of the family is as Irish as the day is long – the black Irish as they’re called. They say her grandma could calm a screaming infant with her singing and her grandpa could always be counted on to tell a good tale. A bit of these qualities must have rubbed off on the girl. From that side of the family she also got her love of great literature, folk music, street fighting, a good pint and Van Morrison.

In the intervening years, Alycea took up traveling and playing guitar. She’s jammed with the local aborigines in the shadow of Ayres Rock, Australia; learned Spanish guitar while singing on the streets of Barcelona; and had a bar full of Austrians with thick Arnold Schwarzenegger-like accents swinging giant beer steins and singing the chorus of her anti-war anthem, Not Your Fool – “No, I won’t be your fool again!” – when President Bush was visiting Vienna in 2006. As a matter of fact during that summer’s tour, it seemed that in every city she went to for a gig, the president and his entourage would show up a day or so later – Budapest, Prague, etc. Maybe someone on his itinerary scheduling staff is a fan? Doubtful – but anything’s possible.
