Like Finland, Poland is home to a thriving metal scene. Bands like Vader and Behometh garner much critical acclaim by stateside critics. However, the Polish music scene doesn’t entirely consist of down-tuned distortion. Alt-rockers Myslovitz are frequently hailed as the “Polish Radiohead” while The Car is on Fire is getting a lot of buzz in the indie pop world. Polish folk music scholar and multi-instrumentalist Jarek Adamów gave traditional Polish folk a modern twist on his 2008 release Contemporary Polish Village Music. Enlisting the help of guitarist Paweł Brzozowski, Adamów’s post-rock treatment of Polish classics could find a new home with fans of Mogwai and Pelican.
Zico (a.k.a. Łukasz Zyśk) is an electronic musician hailing from Wroclaw. Last year he released his debut Neverending Story EP on Summer Rain Recordings, a socially conscious record label that donates a percentage of all royalties to charity. Zico’s trip-hop influenced instrumental “Hope” is the perfect soundtrack for a long walk in the rain.
In case you were just thinking “you know I haven’t really listened to much acid jazz lately,” Cmy are here to save the day. Cmy is a producer/DJ duo comprised of Yaro (a.k.a. Milton Waukee) and DJ George (a.k.a. Jorge Saxon). Together the two loop classic jazz and funk instrumentals to create their own unique brand of grooves.
Metal Man Munson favorite Chain Reaction are staples of the Hard Rock and Metal Channels. The band’s tight rhythm section shows no signs of slowing down any time soon on their track “Values.” This band has more double pedal bass drum action than you can pump a fist to.
Natalia Lesz’s “Girls on Top” is vaguely reminiscent of late 90s pop classics by Britney Spears and Shakira. This Warsaw born
ballerina-turned-singer is a graduate of NYU’s famous Tisch School of the Arts. With a debut album produced by Greg Wells (Celine Dion, Mika, One Republic, Katy Perry) and Glen Ballard (Celine Dion, No Doubt, Alanis Morisette, Annie Lenox, Shakira, Michael Jackson) Natalia is poised to win over her fair share of American fans.
