Viv Peyrat Wins Train’s “Save Me, San Francisco” Songwriting Challenge

Last month nearly 900 artists competed for the chance to win a one-on-one mentoring session with Train in the “Save Me, San Francisco” Songwriting Challenge. Coming in at Number 9, Viv Peyrat commanded the attention of the Train camp and was chosen out of the Top 20 to win the Grand Prize. This singing-songwriting OurStage veteran landed three Top 10 finishes and a first place finish in Acoustic thanks to his songs “Heartbreaker” and “So James Dean” — needless to say this blue-eyed crooner knows his strengths.

With his smoky, powerful voice, impressive guitar skills and solid songwriting, it’s no wonder that a hit-making machine like Train would choose him for the prize. After finding out about his big win, Viv’s praise was enough to make any site’s head swell. “OurStage is AWESOME, thank you so much for this opportunity”. Awwww. Thanks Viv, we think you’re pretty awesome too.

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for updates, and in the meantime check out our other Promotional Channels and see what competitions YOU qualify for. Want to see Train in concert? Check out their Web site for tour dates and information, and give their new CD Save Me, San Francisco a listen here!

This week our Judge is Flydad77, who just happens to be the fly dad of two members of Jazz The Ripper, our May Video Grand Prize Winners!

"Daughter and Dad"

Stats: 3 Predictor awards including 1 Silver, 10 Judging Excellence awards as a Fan.

Bio: Flydad is a very active member of OurStage. (Maybe you should go be his friend!) Musically his role is the “roadie, bank, booking agent, and sound guy.” In life he’s a pilot, aircraft mechanic, avionics tech, and aerospace engineer. Phew! Try saying all that three times fast. And now for his picks as Judge:

Mine Tonight” by Viv Peyrat for Rock

“The introduction is a great hook that grabs your attention. Reminded me of The Cars’ quirky style with rhythm, effects, beats and guitar, while flowing Viv’s clear and solid vocals right through it all. What an awesome voice from a promising young artist! Thanks for sharing your talents with us!”

[Viv was recently our Download of the Week!]

“It’s Life (dance with indifference)” by Marnée for Indie Pop

“This very talented young lady melts my heart every time I hear her sing. The song is upbeat and energetic! Her voice control at such a young age is amazing, as is her stage presence, (go check out her videos). Pay attention to this gal…she’s a rising star! A very enjoyable listen.”

“Georgia On My Mind” by Louie Blue for Cover Bands

“This is an outstanding rendition of a southern classic by Ray Charles. Louie’s voice is perfectly suited, and he presents with convincing, heart-felt soul. Just close your eyes and listen…you’ll think it’s Ray, himself. After that, while you’re listening, read the comments…wow! Thanks Louie!”

Sittin' Pretty: Philadelphia's Viv Peyrat

James Dean—ageless dreamboat, immortal rebel. If you’re gonna channel someone, you may as well aim high.

Viv Peyrat does so in his song, “So James Dean.” And though the 22-year-old singer-guitarist may share some of Dean’s rebel allure, he also begs more contemporary comparisons: Jeff Buckley for looks, and Jason Mraz for musical sensibility.

Peyrat, a Philadelphian by way of France, mixes pop with R&B, funk and blues, sometimes organically, sometimes with the amps turned up. Like Mraz, his singing is insouciant and breezy; with lyrics revealing a pure heart and a positive mind. Though most songs may shuffle along at an unhurried pace, they’re still driven by hooks—lots of them. “So James Dean” is a lackadaisical little melody, brightened by an organ and Peyrat’s pretty arpeggios. But “Mine Tonight” inches closer to pop rock—reverberating guitars pulse and break into an anthemic chorus:

We can ride out in the sunset / We can walk right out the door / We can fly up to the stars/ I’ll leave you running back for more.” To all the Natalie Woods out there, this rebel promises a pretty sweet ride.

Viv Peyrat is becoming a fixture in the top rankings of the Pop and Singer-Songwriter Channels. This French born, Philly bred musician has cultivated quite a following in the “City of Brotherly Love,” recently selling out the city’s popular Tin Angel venue. Don’t let the lip ring and the sleeve tattoo fool you —Viv’s soulful croon and heart melting lyrics are definitely the kind of thing you wouldn’t mind bringing home to your Train-loving mom. With enough guitar chops, not to mention fanbases, to give Jason Mraz and John Mayer a run for their money,  Viv is a guy you’re sure to hear more of in the future. This week’s free track “Aces High” is fresh off his self-released EP of the same title.
