Why Is Christine McVie Re-joining Fleetwood Mac?

Fleetwood MacFleetwood Mac is touring again and, unlike recent reunions for the ’70s mega-stars, this one will include keyboardist, singer, and songwriter Christine McVie. McVie was one of the primary creative forces behind the groups mainstream success, contributing hits like “Don’t Stop,” “You Make Loving Fun,” and later singles “Little Lies” and “Everywhere.”

The band slowly dissolved through the end of the ’80s, reuniting for President Bill Clinton‘s inauguration and then later for a concert special, tour, and record called The Dance, which was a big success. Christine McVie left the group after that and they carried on without her, to mixed results. Now she’s back, which is nice for fans, and it’s obviously better to have her there than not. But you have to wonder why she’d do this, after having successfully, and seemingly wisely, extricated herself. It could be for the money, but I’m not so sure. I think when your public identity is so firmly defined by one thing – in this case, Fleetwood Mac – it must be hard to just say it’s over forever. And when you start to face mortality – McVie’s ex-husband and Mac bassist John McVie has recently battled cancer – the desire to revisit that one thing must be compelling. Finally, as McVie told People magazine, the band’s chemistry is truly and undeniably special. I’d like to think that it’s all just for the fun of it. So while I respected her for getting out while the getting was good, I have to assume the purest motives, and respect that, too.

The tour starts September 29 in Minneapolis. Maybe it will be awesome.

Hannah Thomas Launches Kickstarter

Hannah Thomas Described by Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls as having “the soul of old country [but a] die hard rocker with some punk thrown in the mix,” Georgia-based Hannah Thomas isn’t afraid to play around with genres. Having released her latest album over a year ago, Thomas has been busy traveling the country, playing shows, and writing new material— but in order to help that last one come to fruition, she’ll need your help. Thomas has launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund her latest album, and is seeking $10,500. Beck Performs On ‘The Tonight Show’

beck_hansen_0100Right after his recent North American tour announcement, Beck took to the stage of Jimmy Fallon‘s Tonight Show to perform “Waking Light” and “Say Goodbye,” which appeared as an online exclusive. Both tracks come off Beck’s recent album, Morning Phase, which we’ve raved about in one way or another over the past few months. I wasn’t sure those haunting melodies would necessarily translate well live, but this performance speaks for itself. Catch Beck on tour this spring, and watch both videos below.  Continue reading ‘Beck Performs On ‘The Tonight Show’’

The Mowgli’s Announce SXSW Showcase, Tour Dates

The Mowgli'sI remember the first time I heard The Mowgli’s crooning out “San Francisco” on the radio. I remember because it was right before I made the move to that very city, and I kept thinking that if The Mowgli’s sounded that jazzed about it, I probably should be too. Flash forward three months, and the band is getting ready to play the Pandora showcase at SXSW this Friday, March 14th at 2pm in The Gatsby. Can’t make it out to Austin, TX this week? Don’t worry, the band will be touring the U.S. throughout March and April with support along the way from acts such as American Authors and MisterWives. Check out the full routing here, and more info surrounding their time at SXSW below. Continue reading ‘The Mowgli’s Announce SXSW Showcase, Tour Dates’
