Snoop Lion Gets Political In “No Guns Allowed” Video

Snoop Lion, whom some of you better know as Snoop Dogg, has released the video for his anti-gun single, “No Guns Allowed.”

Featuring YMCMB artist Drake, as well as his daughter Cori B, the latest offering from Snoop Lion is heavy on the Jamaica influence and even heavier with its lyrical content. Many people associate Snoop with his love of weed and history of gang violence, but ever since his name change the legendary MC has been looking at life from a new perspective. The young man who rose up in the early 90s has grown into a man with a unique view of the world around him. This track is about the rash of gun violence plaguing the world recently, and the video further emphasizes this point with footage from seemingly dozens of gun-related incidents. It’s a tough clip to watch, but the message is one that needs to be heard.

Fun fact: This is not the first time Cori B. has appeared on a track. She may only a be a young teen, but Cori has been making music with and without her father for the last couple years. “No Guns Allowed” is her first major feature, but it’s probably safe to assume it won’t be her last. 50 Cent Releases “Major Distribution” Video Featuring Snoop Dogg and Young Jeezy

Taking a moment to reflect, it’s a little hard to imagine that a decade has come and gone since 50 Cent’s Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ exploded onto the hip hop scene. That releases would go on to sell more than seven million copies worldwide and launch 50 Cent into superstardom, but with every great triumph comes and even greater need to do better next time around. 50 kept rapping throughout the 2000s, but he never found the same level of success that he did with his debut. This of course lead some to say he fell off, but after the clip you’re about to see I think it’s evident nothing could be further from the truth.

Marking the first single and video to surface from his forthcoming 2013 full length release, “Major Distribution” was unleashed earlier today to instant praise from fans and critics alike. The track features assistance from heavyhitters Young Jeezy and Snoop Dogg (or Snoop Lion, if you’re weird), but the true star of the show remains 50 with each listen. His charisma feels new again, and it’s unlikely any other single would have had a similar impact. You can experience the song below: Continue reading ’50 Cent Releases “Major Distribution” Video Featuring Snoop Dogg and Young Jeezy’

Madonna defends incarcerated Russian band

Madonna may not have been winning many fans lately (see: hydrangeas, Lady Gaga, Elton John, and Marine Le Pen) but this week she redeemed herself by speaking out against the arrest of Russian punk trio Pussy Riot. The group has been incarcerated since March for performing a “punk prayer” in Moscow’s Christ the Savior Cathedral in protest of Vladimir Putin on the eve of his re-election. Hear Madonna’s speech below.

Made in America Festival lineup announced

Jay-Z announced the lineup for his Made In America Festival this week, and it’s looking pretty ace. Passion Pit, Pearl Jam, Jill Scott, Run D.M.C. Drake, and Hova himself are slated to perform in Philly September 1-2. Looks like Jay-Z forgot that Drake wasn’t made in America, but we’ll let that one slide.

Snoop Dogg To Release Reggae Album “Reincarnated” As Snoop Lion

Snoop Dogg is cooler than you.

The Doggfather, born Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr. is changing things up a bit with his 11th album, Reincarnated, to be released through Vice and Mad Decent some time later this year. The album title is fitting: Pitchfork is reporting that Reincarnated will consist entirely of reggae music, a first for the rapper. Broadus is even going under a different moniker for the occasion as he is recording, releasing, and performing his reggae material as Snoop Lion. Finally, stereotypical stoners everywhere will no longer be forced to choose between listening to their beloved reggae music or their beloved Snoop.

It’s unclear what inspired the rapper to wade into the world of reggae. The move is reminiscent of Nas and Damien Marley’s 2010 collaborative effort Distant Relatives. The first single to emerge from the album, “La La La,” sees Snoop acclimating himself admirably to the stylistic conventions of reggae, delivering his verses with a Jamaican inflection. One assumes that the rest of the record will be as bouncy and insistent as this first cut here, given the deft hand that producer Diplo (credited with his Major Lazer moniker here) almost certainly lent to the proceedings. While a tour has not yet been formally announced, the likelihood that you’ll be able to see Snoop Lion in action is high (snicker). The rapper cum reggae-ist will be performing with backing band The Jungle at Caribana 2012 in Toronto on Friday, August 3rd and it’s safe to assume that a full tour is in the works. A formal release date for the record has not yet been set.

Also, did you see the album art? That image is guaranteed to hang in the common areas of countless college dorms for years to come.
