iRock: The Alt-Rock Comeback

OSBlog02_iRock_MASTER_01Ever hear a song and think to yourself that it was written specifically about you? After some searching through the Rock Channels, I put together a playlist of songs I’d like to hear in the biopic of my life (who knows, it could happen one day). Using unique vocal styling, driven by drum and bass, as well as solid guitar riffs, these artists are giving the Alternative Rock Channel a breath of fresh air. With influences bleeding through the lines of indie rock, artists like Boston-based The Honors and Atlanta’s Rantings of Eva successfully transform the unique sounds from Snow Patrol, Coldplay and The Bravery with their own twists that keeps the listener wanting more. Next time you’re walking down the street, or coming home from a long day take a minute to take in your surroundings while listening to your current playlist. Your eyes may open up to something exciting that you’ve never seen before — that’s the beauty of music.

I’d like to hear some of your own soundtracks ideas. It could be a collection of songs relating to your life, perhaps a series of events, or maybe just music that you like to sit back to and enjoy. No matter what you do, remember to keep it charged and ready to rock!

Found a band in one of the Rock Channels you’d like to share? Leave a comment. I’d love to hear your suggestions and bet your fellow rockers would too.

50 STATES IN 50 WEEKS… WEEK 10: GEORGIA

osblog_50states_ga1

Home Of: James Brown, Ray Charles, Martin Luther King Jr., OutKast, Little Richard, Otis Redding, Jackie Robinson, Cat Power, T.I., Trisha Yearwood, Julia Roberts, The B-52s, R.E.M., Of Montreal, Elephant 6 Recording Company, TLC, Travis Tritt

Fun Facts: State flower; Cherokee rose, state song; “Georgia on My Mind,” state bird; brown thrasher.

The Venues: Athens, GA has been home to some of new wave and indie rock’s best known bands: from R.E.M and the B-52s to newer bands like Of Montreal and The Olivia Tremor Control. All of these bands have played at the legendary 40 Watt Club, aptly named from the single 40 watt bulb that hung in its original location. Athens is also home to the annual non-profit arts and music festival Athfest, which aims to educate locals and visitors about the Athens scene. The Black Lips and We vs. the Shark were among the performers at this year’s festival.

Named after influential bluesman Blind Willie McTell, Blind Willie’s is the place to go for live blues in Atlanta. In its 23 years of existance, the venue has played host to blues musicians from around the country and around the corner.

The Music:

arpseftpebqk-320x2401The Soulphonics & Ruby Velle – Some bands who label themselves “funk” are merely jam bands in disguise. Not so with The Soulphonics & Ruby Velle. This group brings both the James Brown funk and the Sam Cooke soul. Their song “Fever” is guarantees to get any party started, so put on your dancing shoes!

efpqjesomovd-520x520The Bastard Suns – The rough and rowdy sounds of The Bastard Suns have been dominating the OurStage Punk Channel since the early days of the site, earning them eight Top 10 finishes and a #1 Channel Prize. “My Pint” best encapsulates the band’s reggae-meets-irish-drinking song infused punk. Imagine the Dropkick Murphys after an extended holiday in Jamaica.

alvgqrojyvmh-320x240Rantings of Eva – Rantings of Eva blur the lines between alternative, indie rock and pop. Check out “Bright Side” to see why MTV chose them as one of the nominees for the MTV VMA Best Breakout Atlanta. If you like what you hear, be sure to catch Rantings of Eva opening for All Time Low and The White Tie Affair at the VMA concert at Six Flags Over Georgia on August 30th.

yxwfelqrqbcu-320x240Anchors – Anchors doesn’t care about how your most recent breakup makes you feel, unless it makes you feel awesome. The band was formed in 2006 with the intention of remedying what they felt was a severe lack of fun in popular music. “The Legendary Matt” is nothing if not fun, with a rocking piano and sweet harmony vocals.

(MUSIC) INDEPENDENCE DAY

In honor of our forefathers tireless fight for our country’s independence 233 years ago, we are showcasing the Benjamin Franklins, Paul Reveres and John Hancocks of OurStage’s indie channels. Our indie pop and indie rock channels may sometimes seem like the forgotten colonies squashed beneath what some may deem the tyranny of OurStage’s “King” channels. Still, our indie artists continue to climb the Bunker Hill of our charts,  ready to Boston Massacre the ranks and rise to the top of our music revolution. And they won’t stop ’til they see the whites of your eyes.  So check out this Independence Day playlist. These songs are as unique and as liberated as the artists themselves. Now that’s something worth celebrating.

Best of Rock 2008

To ring in the new year, we here at OurStage thought it would be a good idea to step back and reflect on some great new artists that emerged on the scene in 2008 and are likely to be the ones to watch in 2009. This is our list of favorite rockers:

www.ourstage.com

Adam Ezra Group
With the soulful groove of Citizen Cope and a vocal aesthetic similar to the likes of Dave Mathews and John Mayer  this Boston based outfit have made imprints throughout the country this year. Whether it was opening for State Radio at the Nor’Easter Festival in New Hampshire or playing along side Dave Mathews, 311, and John Mayer at the Rothbury Festival in Michigan Adam Ezra Group worked hard this year to become a mainstay in the music scene .

Rantings of Eva
This Atlanta based quartet have had the year of their lives. After six years, Rantings of Eva achieved every band’s ultimate goal and received a record contract. The band entered themselves in the Spin Magazine Hot Pursuit contest, eventually winning the grand prize of a record deal with Original Signal/Epic Records, a brand-new Gibson SG guitar and bass, national press coverage in Spin, and a performance slot at Spin’s Year in Music party.

Say Vandelay
Calling themselves “progressive, aggressive, indie rock and roll” this Augusta, GA band has been around since 2006. With a sound somewhere in between Saosin and the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Say Vandelay went in to record their second EP “Actor Meets Actress” in July, and soon after were signed to Wisteria Records.

Kate Tucker and the Sons of Sweden
Washington state based Kate Tucker and the Sons of Sweden have made a ton of progress in 2008, playing major music festivals including South by Southwest, CMJ, and Bumbershoot. The band was also featured on the “Have You Heard” compilation released by Starbucks in July of this year.

Petticoat Junkies
The Petticoat Junkies‘ sound is something that you were more likely to hear opening up for The Band in the early 70’s than on stage with many current acts.  Though given the reemergence of the alt-country sound  driven by acts like Ryan Adams, Fleet Foxes, and My Morning Jacket, the Junkies have found a home in the world of Indie Rock. After forming in January 2008 the band hit the studio this past summer to record their first album with twang legend Will Ray of the Hellecasters at Sunset Sound Studios in Asheville, NC. The band has been playing shows ever since including a show opening for Brooklyn indie rocker Kaki King.
