Pearl Jam’s ‘Ten’ Just Received Diamond Certification

1991 was a lot longer ago than many of us would like to admit. It’s even possible some of you reading this now weren’t alive then, but in the time that has passed since you’ve entered this world and possibly even graduated high school.

Anyways, in 1991 Pearl Jam released their now legendary album, Ten. The record was a massive success that rode the coattails of the grunge movement throughout the early 90s, spawning many top ten singles that are still in rotation today. Now, after nearly twenty-two years of shelf life and sales of just over 4000 copies in the last week, Ten has finally sold 10 million in the US and become the twenty-second album to ever reach Diamond Certification.

Jay-Z and Pearl Jam To Headline Budweiser Made In America Festival

Jay-Z will kick off the fall with a two-day festival in Philadelphia this September featuring several big names from across the musical spectrum. Jay-Z, headlining along with Pearl Jam, will be joined by other rap and hip-hop acts such as Odd Future, Maybach Music (feat. Rick Ross, Wale, and Meek Mill) and Drake. Several indie pop and electronic artists will also be making appearances, including Miike Snow, Passion Pit, Dirty Projectors, Afrojack, and Skrillex, just to name a few.

The festival will be set in Philadelphia’s own Fairmont Park over Labor Day weekend, dropping beats to support the United Way. According to Billboard.com, Jay-Z stated, “[W]e will not only make history but we’re benefiting a great organization.” He went on to discuss the eclectic program selections, saying that the festival “will encompass every genre of music, creating and showcasing the only genre that matters, ‘great music.’”

Live Nation will produce the event, opening ticket sales on Wednesday, May 23. With a full lineup still yet to be released, show-goers can expect a mix of “rock, hip-hop, R&B, Latin, and dance,” as declared in the press release on Monday morning.

SoundTrax: Bar Fight

Bar fights seem to be one of those things you hear a lot about, but never get to witness in real life. Sure, the prospect seems totally plausible; place a bunch of drunk men in a small space and there’s bound to be issues. Unfortunately, the spectacle seems reserved for the silver screen. But the one thing both movie-style and real life bar fights always seem to lack is a kick-ass soundtrack. And with the exception of Keanu Reeves’ best film The Replacements, not many have very good post-bar-fight music either. So, this week at SoundTrax we’ve put togther a list of songs that ooze with swagger and grit and enough riff-age to fill an entire album on their own.  These hard-hitting, driving, pulsating tunes will get your blood pumping and fists swinging. Just don’t go around blasting this playlist anywhere all willy-nilly, you might start an unwanted rumble at your local coffee shop. Who knows, maybe you did want this to happen….Tyler Durden.

Be sure to pack these tunes with you next time you feel like the local watering hole might turn a bit hostile. And we’ll take care of your post-coital audio needs at a later date.

The Strokes help build up the tension before things get too crazy, while Pearl Jam provide the backing track for the initial pushing and shoving that always starts out as a good-natured joust. Next, 2nd HALF pick up the pace and keep the action driving forward with an unrelenting track that’s got some balls. Say Anything drop a little comic relief into the scene with the playful intro to their mini rock-opera, before the fists start flying once again. Next up, Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown get the feet involved with a tune that features impressive guitar work, a catchy hook and a crazy amount of 70s swagger. Before the bass heavy track by Red Hot Chili Peppers grounds things a bit, Cold Conspiracy’s story of heartbreak makes for a chugging, head-slamming track that would be great in any Madden franchise. Finally, The Cranberries close us out with their angst-ridden ’90s classic.

Vocal Points: Voices To Look For In 2012

As great as 2011 has been, it’s time to start fresh. So, while you’re making your New Year’s resolutions, start thinking about what music will be your soundtrack to 2012. Here are some of the voices we’re looking forward to hearing more from in the year to come!

Paramore, who made news in late 2010 for their split with founding members Josh and Zac Farro, are scheduled to release a full-length album in early 2012. So far, we’ve heard singles “Hello Cold World”, “Renegade” and most recently “In The Mourning”. Still, we’re wondering how the full-length album reflects any change in the band’s style. And it’ll be particularly interesting to see if Hayley Williams‘ voice is strong enough to keep fans hooked.

We’re also looking forward to having John Mayer‘s voice back in 2012! His fifth studio album, Born and Raised, which was initially scheduled for the end of 2011, will now be coming out in 2012, as soon as Mayer’s voice has completely recovered. And since the album’s already mostly completed (just missing vocals) it looks like we don’t have too long to wait!

Mumford and Sons won’t be keeping us waiting much longer either. According to the band, their next LP will be more mature, sounding a bit like “Black Sabbath meets Nick Drake”. And after the success of Sigh No More, its hard for us to imagine the band’s follow-up being anything less than great. Our fingers are crossed. Press Shuffle: Songs To Be Silent To

Time and time again, listeners shy away from instrumental music simply because it usually lacks an immediately relatable trait. It doesn’t have the traditional lyrical hooks and memorable vocal lines that popular music is known for and our modern ears are accustomed to. And, while the proficient composition and performance of instrumental music usually requires a certain level of musical skill, listening to it does not. The genre only asks for open ears and an open mind. Now, there are many ways in which we can approach instrumental music—as a pure, unadulterated representation of emotion, as a chance to fuse musical influences without the restrictions of convention, as background music for a film, slideshow or life, and so forth. The beauty of instrumental music is how open it is to interpretation by the listener. Much like in visual art, instrumental artists can channel a message without telling the audience explicitly what they were trying to convey.

Jeff Cochell

Somehwere” – Jeff Cochell: First off, something familiar to the ears. Rock and folk musicians have flown the instrumental flag for a while now, and this style of acoustic guitar work has been explored by bands all the way from Pearl Jam to your local singer-songwriter playing at a coffee shop’s open mic night.

Spirit Of India” – Meir Shitrit: Fusing traditional Indian instruments and scales with western songwriting, a style was popularized in the ’60s by pioneers like John Coltrane and George Harrison, this track shouldn’t feel too far away from home.

Russian Concertino” – Giancarlo Angioni: The beauty of well-performed flamenco is lost on no one. The passion that goes into the playing and the sensual vibe that surrounds it has been captivating listeners for decades.

Salsalito” – Level 10 Band: Latin jazz always brings rhythmic energy to any playlist. The danceable power of the clave is undeniable, and rightly so; these ensembles usually feature a large rhythm section with multiple percussion players.

Mediterranean” – Fahir Atakoglu: Atakoglu is a personal favorite here in Press Shuffle. It’s easy to see why: this level of talent and skill isn’t something you come by too often, and we’re not ones to let it slip through unnoticed.

Snizzle” – Justin Hellman: Small combo jazz is simply timeless. It’s the right music for so many occasions; from rainy day music while you read a book in your favorite living room nook to a night out to a bar with the guys, they’ve got you covered. The versatility of this music is unmatched.

Temporarily Destabilized” – CHON: Instrumental metal tends to focus on complex songwriting and technical playing, and this is a perfect example of the outcome when those two. Not only do the gentlemen from CHON knock it out of the park with their musicianship, but they do so time after mind-blowing time. Prepare to have your brain melt out your ears.
