Set It Off

The name alone should tell you Set It Off’s M.O. The Tampa-based band is all about starting a frenzy through adrenaline-soaked, emotive rockers. Led by singer Cody Carson, Set It Off blends theater, social sensitivity and angst a la bands like My Chemical Romance and Panic At The Disco. On “Horrible Kids” Carson, guitarists Dan Clermont and Zach DeWall, bassist Austin Kerr and drummer Maxx Danziger delve into bullying with equal parts empathy and rage. It’s jittery and paranoid, but ultimately a redemptive tune. But on “Breathe In, Breathe Out,” the mood takes a turn towards a manic carnival. Jabbing guitars, coursing verse and a soaring chorus create a totally irresistible, totally schizoid rocker. Set It Off are masters of mood swings. On “Pages and Paragraphs” Carson sings, “I’m on cloud nine.” Even if happiness is fleeting there’s still pleasure to be found in pain. Enjoy the ride.

Michael Jackson video teaser released

Michael Jackson’s posthumous album, MICHAEL, is slated for release on Tuesday. The record features collaborations with artists like 50 Cent and Lenny Kravitz, but because many of the recordings were works in progress at the time of Jackson’s death, Sony’s release of MICHAEL has been fraught with controversy. However, watching the new video teaser for Jackson’s duet with Akon, “Hold My Hand,” makes it hard to be bummed about the record. Check it out below.

Rolling Stone’s top 30 albums & 50 singles of 2010

Rolling Stone has released their list of the top 30 albums and 50 singles of 2010. And now we have a million questions. Kid Rock beating Kings of Leon and Spoon—you sure about that Rolling Stone? Taylor Swift—sure, she can sell records, but does she really deserve the Number 13 position? And, Kanye West, your album is great and all, but seriously, Arcade Fire had one of the best albums of all time. Seriously.

The Bad

“Dead” celebrities back to life on Twitter

In support of the AIDS charity Keep A Child Alive, Alicia Keys, one of the organization’s founders, helped kick off the “Digital Death” campaign on Twitter last week. Keys, along with celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake, swore off tweeting until a $1 million fundraising goal was met. The campaign got off to a slow start, with the public donating less half that sum after a week. Just when it looked like their silence would be permanent, frustrated celebs with itchy Twitter fingers recruited philanthropist Stewart Rahr, who swooped in to pony up the $500,000+ difference. Great news for Keep A Child Alive, bad news for those of us enjoying the Kim and Khloe Kardashian silent treatment.

LCD Soundsystem to stop touring in 2011

James Murphy told Spinner this week, during the Art Basel festival in Miami, that his band LCD Soundsystem will stop touring permanently after this year. “We’re done being just a pro rock ensemble,” Murphy says. From now on, “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House” will have to only play at your house.

The Ugly

Morrissey delivers the diss to Bryan Ferry

When Morrissey found out that Roxy Music frontman Bryan Ferry, whose album For Your Pleasure he listed as one of his top 13 favorite records, was an avid hunter, he did what any combative vegetarian would do and penned an open letter taking Ferry and a handful of other British celebs to task. Calling Ferry’s son Otis “Odious Ferry” and Ferry himself “Bryan Ferret,” The Smith’s singer apologized to fans for his support of Roxy Music in years past. Hunters, beware. To Morrissey, you are the quarry.

Poptarts: Lion of Ido

You’ll have to forgive me for my unrelenting love of Top 40 pop hits, but the first song I listened to by Lion of Ido was their kick ass cover of “No Air” by Jordin Sparks.  As much as I love Jordin, I give huge props to Lion of Ido for this cover. It’s absolutely awesome. After falling in love with them via our mutual love of “No Air,” I discovered their covers weren’t the only  thing that’s awesome. Front man Ido Zmishlany has a voice equipped with the power of pop rock groups like Panic At The Disco and depth of indie favs such as The Killers’ Brandon Flowers. And he writes pop hooks that could compete with any Top 40 hit. Their songs are perfect for any indie pop lover with an affinity for hand claps and snaps mixed with electro pop beats.

Hailing from NYC, these guys have headlined at marquee venues all over the city. They have performed with the like of Matt & Kim and have written songs with The Click Five, The Cars and Tommy Lee. Ido is also currently producing fellow OurStage artist Amanda Kaletsky’s new album. Lion of Ido’s video for “Hard  To Love” (below) showcase why this band is actually easy to adore. The montage of incriminating pictures during a night on the town in NYC is the perfect backdrop for this relentlessly catchy song about the struggles of love. Check out the band on OurStage and their song “Day By Day” below! You can also download their new EP for FREE right here!

Poptarts: The Hollow Sound

OSBlog02_PopTarts_MASTER_01Nowadays, MTV’s image mostly consists “reality” shows starring superficial, plastic LA girls and fist-pumping “guidos” from the tri-state area. Not exactly the cutting-edge music giant we once knew. However, under that horrifyingly hilarious exterior lies a sleeping giant, percolating with innovative new acts with just enough pop hooks and power to bring the music back into Music TeleVision.  One such band can be found right here on OurStage. Not only has The Hollow Sound‘s music been featured on MTV’s College Life, but the band was selected as four- time finalists on MTVU’s Best Music On Campus as well. As the 2009 grand prize winners, the band got the opportunity to perform at Six Flags as part of MTV’s VMA Tour along with All Time Low and The White Tie Affair. (Check out their VMA Tour video here!) They also performed at the 2008 Warped Tour and SXSW in 2009. These guys obviously have a pretty impressive résumé , but what is it about their music that makes it so popular with the MTV folks?

DRAMA KINGS

daddysmilk

Rock and theater have always been ardent bedfellows, ever since The Rocky Horror Picture Show did the time warp and Meatloaf did anything for love. Broadway has delivered countless rock musicals from anonymity to mainstream consciousness, from Jesus Christ Superstar to Hedwig and The Angry Inch. The aforementioned Meatloaf along with KISS and Alice Cooper took their rock to operatic heights during the ‘70s and inspired recent theater kids like My Chemical Romance and Panic at the Disco to update the rock opera canon with youthful sensibilities.

When you think of Daddysmilk, consider them as equals to MCR and PATD. Hailing from Manchester, UK by way of Norway, the band churns out fantastically cheeky rock with a theatrical sweep. There’s plenty of dissonance and distortion – guitars careen herky jerky to the raucous stomp of drums. Singer Kris Zeigler teases, mocks and croons like a rakish pied piper, beckoning listeners to follow him through his tales and character sketches. Surrender now, and you’ll find yourself doing anything for Daddysmilk’s deliciously melodic rock drama. (But you won’t do that.)
