OurStage Music Licensing Update May 2013

From time to time, we like to update our community on our adventures in the world of music licensing. We are always working on behalf of the artists in our licensing catalog, looking for opportunities for great placements in television, film, commercials, and more. One of our pluggers, Kate, is working out in Nashville – Music City USA – and sends us this update:

This past week we have been busy pitching songs to hit shows on the CW Network…this week we are gathering new songs for a NYC record label with signed, established artists. Request is for songs much like  Jason Derulo or Justin Timberlake with an upbeat/dance/party vibe.  Please upload your song(s) that fit this criteria to your OurStage account and tweet @OurStage and @katetaylormusic your link.

See a selection of some of our recent placements right here.

The Wallies: Artist Of The Week

The Wallies

Who would suspect that America’s best hope in fending off the vibrant young hordes of Arctic Monkeys, Fratellis, Subways, and Bloc Partys from overseas would spring not from, say, Brooklyn, but instead from Sarasota, Florida? A hopeful nation should be turning their eyes to that city’s very own The Wallies, an indie rock band with the fire, visceral appeal, and goddam great songs to stand up against any frenetic guitar chargers. Singer Neven Skoro (who, okay, originally hails from Croatia) has a casual delivery that compliments the urgency of the band, in contrast to so many singers who struggle to keep pace with the charging, post-punk smash being laid down around them. If The Strokes all took uppers and Julian Casablancas stayed down on Quaalude level, you’d have something like The Wallies.

These guys keep it to three minutes at a pop, for the most part, with songs like “Subtle Romance” and the wonderfully titled “What I Like About You Is You’re Rock Bottom.” A notable exception is “Wrong Way,” which errs on the side of brevity with a 1:44 running time. You’re going to love them all.

OurStage At Sea: Missive From The Rock Boat XIII

Ahoy, OurStage!

James, here – your faithful OurStage editor and social media coordinator. I’m writing you from atop the Norwegian Peal, a gigantic cruise ship transformed into the 13th annual ROCK BOAT that is currently sailing somewhere near the Bahamas. It’s 85 degrees and cloudy here, but still gorgeous, and we are less than an hour from our third full day of rock and roll. I would have written sooner, but satellite-based Internet is not exactly what you would call a reliable form of communication. Don’t worry though, I’ve been carrying around my camera on all our adventures, and will have plenty to share with you all when I return.

The Rock Boat XIII departed from the Port Of Miami on Sunday night just a short while after the sun had begun to set. Organizers passed out shots of (festival sponsor) Cabo Wabo tequila to everyone of age, and a toast was held to celebrate the beginning of our journey. Later, from the pool deck, (also known as the top floor), attendees watched NEEDTOBREATHE play a full one-hour set while the lights illuminating the Florida coast slowly slipped out of sight.

The first two days were spent on Great Stirrup Cay, a tiny island outfitted with a large, ocean front stage specifically setup for this event. The boat’s 2000+ attendees were taxied from the ship to shore by a fleet of small tender boats, then set free to roam the land, take part in a number of aquatic attractions, eat BBQ, and of course, rock out in the sun. I saw festival hosts Sister Hazel play both full band and acoustic sets, as well as emerging acts like OS favorites Bronze Radio Return, all from the comfort of the ocean (it was way too hot to stand on the beach).

Judge The Ernie Ball “Save Your Strings” Pop Competition

How would you like to see your favorite pop artist win a year’s supply of strings and accessories from Ernie Ball? Now what if we added that one Grand Prize winner will also receive an endorsement deal from Ernie Ball, along with a Music Man guitar or bass for each guitarist in their band?

Pretty amazing deal, right? Well that’s exactly what we’re offering with our Ernie Ball Save Your Strings Competition. All you have to do is head over to the Pop channel by April 26 and get voting for your favorite artist.

Soundtrax: Anti-Valentine’s Day Songs

Anti-Valentine’s Day by OurStage on Grooveshark

For those of you who couldn’t stand all the sap in our Valentine’s Day playlist, this one’s for you. We’ve filled this week’s Soundtrax with heartache, misery, and a touch of independence for those of you looking to get away from candy-filled hearts and store-bought flowers. Frank Turner, the Buzzcocks, and OurStage artist the Airborne Toxic Event are just a few of the bands on this week’s list that are right there beside you.

So scroll down and get into the Valentine’s Day mood. Romance, love, and plenty of sap. Continue reading ’5 Valentine’s Day Songs To Make You Swoon’

News In Brief: February 12, 2013

Lots of interesting little bits today, kiddos.

Timbuck and the JZA…what, I can’t make up nicknames for popular entertainers that I hope will catch on, even though they’re super-stupid and I know they won’t? Fine, Justin Timberlake and Jay-Z (happy?) are reportedly planning a big tour together. Jay-Z guests on JT’s new “Suit And Tie” and the pair have been appearing together a lot recently, most notably at the Grammys this past Sunday. Via Rolling Stone

Spin has neatly summarized the pop-up feud between The Black Keys’ Patrick Carney and Leif Garrett Justin Bieber. Carney, cornered by TMZ cameras, let out a short dig at the pop’s littlest sensation. Known lately for taking shots at some, uh, easy targets, Carney’s remarks hinted that Bieber had been snubbed at the Grammys because the Grammys are for music. Conclusions drawn. Bieber hit back on twitter that Carney should be “slapped around haha.” HAHA YOU ASSHOLE, I WILL HAVE YOUR LEGS BROKEN, is what we think he was getting at. Carney then invited a more intimate form of corporal punishment.

Phoenix has announced an impending new album, called Bankrupt! I can’t imagine the title has anything to do with the French quartet’s bank accounts, after the success (and double success if you count some mega licensing deals) of 2009′s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (named in tribute to Eddie Van Halen‘s son Wolfgang, I assume). Tour dates, track list, over at the AV Club.

Despite the buzz, which itself was despite the consistent denials, Ben Gibbard has again refuted the notion of a new Postal Service LP. It is NOT GOING TO HAPPEN, MUSIC NERDS. Gibbard “broke” the “news” while announcing that there are two new singles, both to be included with the reissue of Give Up.
