Afternoon Ephemera: The Replacements Return, Dylan and Dawes, Weiland Responds, NIN News

Internet love song: Scott Weiland wonders how he can be fired from Stone Temple Pilots, and says he first heard about it in the press this morning. Rolling Stone:

I learned of my supposed “termination” from Stone Temple Pilots this morning by reading about it in the press.  Not sure how I can be “terminated” from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that’s something for the lawyers to figure out.  In the meantime, I’m looking forward to seeing all of my fans on my solo tour which starts this Friday.

Dylan and the Dawes: Dawes announced on Twitter today that they will be opening up for Bob Dylan on his next tour. We predict backstage mayhem. Hidden Track has the dates.

New Nine Inch Nails news: Lots happening with Trent Reznor‘s venerable band lately. In addition to adding guitarist Adrian Belew (wow, cool), the lineup now includes Eric Avery of Jane’s Addiction and Josh Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv. Now comes news of some tour dates. Spin reports the band will hit a few international festivals before kicking off an arena tour this fall.

Return of The ‘Mats: After 23 years, beloved rockers The Replacements have released a new song. It’s a Gordon Lightfoot cover (obv.) called “I’m Not Sayin’,” and it’s streaming at Pitchfork. Chris Mars, Paul Westerberg, and Tommy Stinson reunited to record a 7-inch EP called Songs For Slim, to benefit their ailing former bandmate Slim Dunlap, who suffered a stroke last year. The band pressed just 250 copies of the EP and auctioned them off to raise over $100k. Nice.

Album Review: How To Destroy Angels – “An Omen” EP

It’s nice to see that Trent Reznor has found a soul mate who is just as weird as he is. His new project, How To Destroy Angels, is comprised of him, his wife Mariqueen Maandig, and Nine Inch Nails contributors Atticus Ross and Rob Sheridan. The result on their second EP, An Omen (styalized on their website as An omen_ EP by How to destroy angels_) sounds more or less like a collection of creepy, experimental, minimalist, girl-fronted versions of  NIN album interludes. That being said, it’s a fairly interesting and enjoyable listen.

The first track, “Keep it together,” is the most NIN-esque song on the album, with sparse electronic robot percussion and a two-note reverbed guitar line that repeats while dissonant synths wash over the whole track. The only difference is where you would expect to hear Reznor’s voice, you hear Maandig singing in a quiet cryptic way. But of course, before long, Reznor comes in with backup vocals and the two of them create harmonizing polyrhythmic layers repeating “I can’t keep it together” in a way that is reminiscent of “All The Love In The World” or “Every Day Is Exactly The Same” from NIN’s With Teeth. The structure and mood of this song set the tone for the rest of the album. Each track is a slow burn with very subtle dynamic variation, if any. Listen To Trent Reznor’s Theme Song For “Call Of Duty: Black Ops II”

Nine Inch Nails mastermind and movie soundtrack composer Trent Reznor has written, recorded, and produced a theme song for the new first-person shooter warfare video game Call Of Duty: Black Ops II. The instrumental track is a dark and foreboding mix between unmistakable NIN electronics and distortion and Reznor’s equally as recognizable and suspenseful score-writing (as heard in the film The Social Netowork).

The game will be released tomorrow (Tuesday, November 13th), as will Reznor’s debut album for his and wife Mariqueen Maandig‘s new project, How To Destroy Angels. The EP entitled An Omen also features Atticus Ross and Rob Sheridan, both NIN collaborators.

While Reznor appears to have his hands full at the moment, we may be expecting some new NIN material in the near future. In the meantime, check out his theme for Call Of Duty: Black Ops II below.

Dave Grohl To Direct And Produce ‘Sound City’

Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters is set to helm a documentary about the famed Sound City Studios located in Van Nyus, California.

As reported by Variety, Grohl was inspired to make the film after purchasing a 1972 Neve 8028 recording console from the studio, when they closed for commercial use in May of last year. The console is known for legendary sound quality and was the workhorse on albums by everyone from Fleetwood Mac to Tom Petty, Neil Young, Guns N’ Roses, Rage Against The Machine, Nine Inch Nails, and Metallica. Grohl himself recorded Nirvana‘s 1991 revolutionary album Nevermind at the star studded studio.

Sound City is a film about America’s greatest unsung recording studio,” Grohl said. “Deep in California’s sun-burnt San Fernando Valley, it was the birthplace of legend. It was witness to history.”

The documentary will focus on the albums recorded there through interviews with the artists and producers, as well as featured performances, and a discussion on the human element of music in such a digital age. Still no word on a release date, but we’re hoping it’s because they are taking their time mixing the audio on that gorgeous Neve board that Grohl has laying around.

Paramore and M83 Producer Team Up On New Album

In an update on Paramore’s website, singer Hayley Williams has revealed that the band is now working on a new album. This release will be their fourth record and the first since 2009′s brand new eyes.

“The guys and I went in to record a song for our 4th album about a week and a half ago,” Williams says. “So without delaying any longer, we would like to announce that our 4th album’s producer is Justin Meldal-Johnsen.” Meldal-Johnsen, best known as the former bassist of both Beck and Nine Inch Nails, has most recently produced M83‘s double album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming. Williams also reveals that while they have recorded their first song, it is unlikely that the album will be released any time soon.

“Usually, we are rushing to make a very strict deadline which so far has just not been right for this record. We cannot assure you it will be out this year.”

Lana Del Rey Lady Gaga
Karen O Adele
  • Lana Del Rey better watch herself, less she gets a face full of crazy Courtney Love.
  • After getting cut from The Muppets, Lady Gaga’s going with her second choice.
  • Seeing Adele bide her time with newly fixed vocal chords is actually kind of terrifying.
  • Granted she wasn’t even alive at the height of Led Zeppelin’s career, but C’MON.
  • More like a high-pitched girly scream, according to Bono, but hey, who are we to judge?
  • Glad to see Trent Renzor can go back to being a dark, moody, and misjudged artist again.
  • Just announced: we’ve found Jay-Z and Kanye. They’re in this mysterious place called the zone.
  • So, iTunes UK is panning out pretty much exactly the same as the rest of the world then.

Sound And Vision: Pop Goes the Previews — The Best and Worst of Fall Movie-Trailer Music

Whoever invented the movie preview must be some kind of genius. Because of them, half the fun of seeing a movie on the big screen is getting there—to the main attraction, that is. It always takes a few good trailers to put me in the mood. But sometimes, if the words don’t get in the way (damn, bad screenplays!), the music does. Too often terrible songs ruin perfectly good trailers—or make bad ones worse.

That said, movie-trailer music has come a long way. For a brief period in the early ’90s, nearly every other one seemed to feature the soothing new-age sounds of Enya floating by in the background. Nowadays we get a larger assortment of musical backdrops (pop, classical, rock, hip hop, techno and, of course, vintage Motown), some of which can actually turn must-avoid into must-see — at least until the coming attraction is over and sensible thinking once again prevails.

Variety, however, hasn’t done away with predictability, and recently, while screening trailers for some upcoming autumn releases, I noticed a few rules at play.

1. No self-respecting Oscar contender stoops to the tops of the pops. David Fincher may have gotten Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails to score The Social Network last year, but he knew better than to use Radiohead’s 1992 hit “Creep” in the trailer. Instead, he used a haunting cover by Belgium’s Scala & Kolacny Brothers. This year, for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (December 21), he punctuates the sneak-peek action not with Led Zeppelin’s classic version of “Immigrant Song” but with a near-equally exhilariting remake by Reznor and Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.
