Straight out of Memphis, TN and citing influences like Tegan and Sara, Nirvana, Johnny Cash, and Muse, this week’s featured artist, Alex da Ponte is about as diverse as they come. In addition to a range of musical influences, there’s no shortage of literary and historical references within da Ponte’s lyrical library. With a voice both feminine and strong, backed by engaging instrumentals, you’ll be playing her OurStage chart topper, “Leaves” on repeat.

Now that would be an interesting combination. Can you imagine both bands competing with one another to create the most futuristic modern indie rock explosion? Think of the light show they’d need if they performed together. The crowd would go blind! Well perhaps we’ll see (or not see, rather) sometime in the near future. According to NME, The Killers frontman Brandon Flowers says they would like to collaborate with Muse. The two bands have “become good friends” and they’d “never rule out working together.” Whether this will definitely happen is uncertain, but you can bet that the result would be either absolute “Madness” or “Glamorous Indie Rock and Roll.”

Move over, Coldplay. And tell U2 the news. Muse is gunning for the latter bands’ longtime job, the one for which the former might be considered naturally next in line: biggest rock band on the planet.

Bono, for one, may have seen this coming. When Muse opened for U2 on U.S. dates of the iconic Irish band’s 360° Tour in September and October of 2009, U2 frontman Bono touted the young English trio as one to watch — and listen to — the next biggest thing. Muse deserved the distinction: What other rock & roll band can claim responsibility for inspiring the Twilight saga?

But being the muse of a best-selling author and earning plum spots on the soundtracks to the blockbuster films based on her blockbuster book series do not ruling rock Gods make. Muse, though, is about to give it a shot with their upcoming sixth album, The 2nd Law (due October 2), which is receiving perhaps the biggest pre-release marketing push since Lady Gaga’s Born This Way. If you’ve seen the teaser trailer for the upcoming Muse album, you may have noticed that the band is going in a bit of a different direction than usual: dubstep.

Seeing as this has caused quite a commotion among fans, an explanation seems more than necessary. According to NME.com the guys in the band “were so inspired after watching a Skrillex gig, they penned the track ‘…Unsustainable’,” featured on their forthcoming album and in the previously mentioned trailer. This may come as a shock to some, but if you really think about it, it’s not too far out there for the tech-heavy English modern rock band. Muse has always incorporated interesting effects, electronics, and breakdowns in their music, and since dubstep originated in England, it was only a matter of time before they applied some Skrill-esque concepts.

Of course, being the gear-heads they are, Matthew Bellamy and crew could not simply settle for just computer-generated sounds. They decided to “challenge the laptop. We created something that was dubsteppy, but we wanted to see if we could do it with real instruments. We wanted to ask, ‘Can rock bands compete with what these guys are doing?’”

Muses’s new album, entitled The 2nd Law, will be released on September 17.
