Morrissey Cancels Remaining Dates Of U.S. Tour

Bad news, Smiths fans. Due to illness, it has been announced Morrissey is cancelling all remaining US tour dates. You can view every date at the end of this post.

Though this is the biggest development as of yet, Morrissey has been having health problems throughout 2013. A bleeding ulcer already forced the former Smiths frontman to postpone three shows, while double pneumonia led him to reschedule his San Francisco concert.

“Despite his best efforts to try to continue touring, Morrissey has to take a hiatus and will not be able to continue on the rest of the tour,” a statement says.

Afternoon Ephemera: Morrissey, Roadrunner, Green Day, Emily White

Morrissey Watch ’13: Moz is back on the road. The serial canceller (he has a cold, his mom is sick, his dog ate his discography, he can’t get his shirt off, he’s feeling upbeat) has announced 25 new dates for the U.S. of A. Check them out at Spin.

Battle of the bands heats up: For a while there, it seemed like an easy win to get “Roadrunner” by Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lovers named as the official rock song of Massachusetts. The paean to Rt. 128 livin’ name checks the Stop n Shop and openly declares love for the state, and hails the “power of Massachusetts.” But now, the campaign (initiated by Boston-based politco/musico/publicisto Joyce Linehan, who enlisted Rep. Marty Walsh to introduce the bill) has found challengers in the form of not-really-music-fans who are offended at the idea of a state rock song being something other than the classic rock songs they can hear while dining at Applebees. Hey Aerosmith is from Boston, these two local representatives presumably said to themselves, so let’s make it “Dream On,” even though that song has nothing to do with the state. How about “Freeze Frame,” dumbasses? Or “My Best Friend’s Girl?” “Step-by-Step?”

I’m not looking at you David Lowrey: Emily White, the same NPR Music intern whose blog post “I Never Owned Any Music To Begin With” sparked an Internet firestorm has finally delivered a measured and though-provoking follow-up. We wouldn’t call it a response to her critics, since she wisely does not engage them or discuss the nature of the debate itself, as many did in the aftermath. Worth the read here at Billboard.

Billy Joe Armstrong is off the junk or whatever it was, exhaustion or something, I dunno: Spin reports that Armstrong and his Green Day cohorts will hit SXSW in Austin this March before launching a 33-date U.S. tour. They will perform at the festival, and host screenings of American Idiot (the lunchbox the film) and their album documentary ¡Quatro!

Morrissey Cancels Tour Dates Due To Hospitalization

Following his hospitalization in Royal Oak, Michigan last week, Morrissey has been diagnosed with a bleeding ulcer, which will force him to cancel six dates of his current tour, to be rescheduled. He is expected to make a full recovery within two weeks’ time, and will soon announce the rescheduled dates of his cancelled appearances in North Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, Kansas, Iowa, and Nebraska. The tour is scheduled to resume on February 9 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Contrary to his lyrics, Morrissey apparently never starts something he can’t finish.

Morrissey Performs “Action Is My Middle Name” On ‘Letterman’

On the eve of resuming his previously postponed tour dates, Morrissey made a quick stop on the Late Show With David Letterman to perform a new song called “Action Is My Middle Name.” While it’s a far cry from the days of The Smiths, Morrissey has built a new and powerful persona over the years, reinventing himself as a different kind of torch singer, without relinquishing his unique and beautiful brand of pathos. His performance here is nothing short of alluring, as he belts his way through three and a half revitalized minutes of top-shelf melody, songcraft, and showmanship. You can view the video after the jump.

Songs Of The Revolution: Little Barrie

The shag-haired, leather-clad men of Little BarrieLewis Wharton, Virgil Howe, and the eponymous Barrie Cadogan – are exactly what you expect. When they stopped into our studio for the final Songs Of The Revolution session of 2012, they were a vision of no-frills rock and roll. Polite, of course, but these guys were there to work. After a chat about the set up – no isolation, everything in the room, don’t care if it sounds dirty, “we don’t really play stripped-down” – the guys jumped into three songs ranging from propellant riffage to groove-based mood rock. Barrie himself is known for his session and touring guitar work with acts like Spritualized, Edwyn Collins (who has produced the band), Morrissey, The Chemical Brothers, and more. This range of quality music, along with his stellar guitar playing, is on display in this exclusive session for OurStage. Watch the streaming videos and download the mp3s for free. See you in 2013.

Morrissey Performs Live & Discusses Smiths Reunion On The Colbert Report

Stephen Colbert isn’t exactly known for his subtleties, so it came as a bit of a shock when Morrissey agreed to not only perform on the The Colbert Report, but also sit down for a short interview. Hardly cracking a smile the entire time, Morrissey and Colbert battle it out for one of the more awkward five minute interviews I’ve seen, before Morrissey goes on to perform the fairly new and unreleased “People Are the Same Everywhere,” along with 2009’s “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris.”

You can watch Morrissey and Colbert’s banter on vegetarianism, royalty, and why The Smiths aren’t getting back together, along with both performances right here.

Sound And Vision: Rihanna Vs. Christina Aguilera Vs. Alicia Keys: Who Will Win November’s Battle of the Divas?

Sweet November is about to spawn another monster. Not a beast like the ugly, twisted child Morrissey warbled on about in 1990, but three beauties in the monster diva throwdown of the year. It will be the month in which three of pop’s biggest female players–Rihanna, Christina Aguilera, and Alicia Keys—all release new albums. Who’ll emerge “triumphant”—to quote the title of top diva Mariah Carey’s new single, from an album that won’t be released until March of 2013, long after the diva dust settles? Read on… Continue reading ‘Sound And Vision: Rihanna Vs. Christina Aguilera Vs. Alicia Keys: Who Will Win November’s Battle of the Divas?’

Watch Morrissey Perform On Jimmy Fallon

Morrissey and his spokesperson have been undergoing some major rumor battling lately. The Smiths are reuniting, they aren’t reuniting….but maybe they are!

They definitely aren’t, and after helping squash those rumors into the ground, Morrissey found time to perform two songs on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

View a performance of  “You Have Killed Me” along with a cover of Frankie Valli’s “To Give (The Reason I Live)” here and catch Morrissey on tour this month. Continue reading ‘Watch Morrissey Perform On Jimmy Fallon’
