An artist is booked to perform at a local venue. On the night of the gig, they show up on time, bring in some fans, play a great set and go home. But they’re not done yet. Savvy artists know the value of a followup email. After playing at a venue or working with a producer, photographer or any other industry professional, the artist should send an email indicating their gratitude for the opportunity, enjoyment of the experience and desire to work together again. This may seem like an insignificant detail, but an artist who is polite and easy to work with is much more likely to be asked back for a repeat performance than an artist with big talent and even bigger attitude. Remember, courtesy counts.

A talent buyer can get a sense of an artist’s sound from the music featured in their profile and EPK and pretty much guess what kind of music they make from their bio. But how does a talent buyer get a sense of how an artist’s performance will actually go? Any artist can sound slick on a recording thanks to studio magic. Performance is another thing all together.  Is the artist entertaining to watch or do they stare at their feet? How do audiences react to the artist? These are things that talent buyers consider before they book an act, and why including a live performance video in profiles and EPKs is so important.

A good live performance video should showcase the bands energy and interaction with the audience as well as each other. Sound quality is essential as well. While it is a given that audio on a live video won’t sound nearly as clean as anything recorded in a studio, the video shouldn’t sound like it was recorded in a wind tunnel, either. It’s easy to get caught up customizing your EPKs and online profiles — uploading new songs, adding pictures, writing a killer bio — but one important piece of information often overlooked is a clear list of who actually makes up your band and what they play. This is especially important in terms of live performance.

Talent buyers looking to book your band want to know whether they are getting a four piece rock band, a stripped down duo or a solo artist with a string quartet. If a talent buyer is under the impression that they have booked a four piece band because that’s the kind of music you had posted on your EPK or Web site and you show up solo, odds are you won’t get booked by that talent buyer again.

To avoid this situation, make sure there is a space on your EPK or Web site that lists all members of your band, permanent or temporary, as well as what they play. If you are a singer-songwriter who performs solo, as a duo and with a full electric backing band, include this information in your EPK. You may find that you can book more live performance opportunities of you are flexible with your musical arrangement.
