Coachella 2013 Announces Lineup: Phoenix, The Postal Service, Red Hot Chili Peppers Headlining

Coachella has released the official line up for the 2013 festival. Among the headliners are Blur, The Stone Roses, Phoenix, and Red Hot Chili Peppers. But that’s just the beginning of a very long (and very awesome) list of bands slated to play this year’s event.

Other noteable acts include The Postal Service, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Lou Reed, Passion Pit, Of Monsters and Men, Alt-J, Dropkick Murphys, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Social Distortion, and the Lumineers. Riffs, Rants & Rumors: Elliott Murphy, Last of the Rock Stars

What do Jane Fonda, Johnny Depp, Gianni Versace, and Elliott Murphy have in common? They’re all among the recipients of France’s Médaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris, a high cultural honor that’s presented by the mayor of Paris himself. The most recent singer to be awarded the medal was French chanson legend Juliette Greco, but on October 1, New York-born singer/songwriter Murphy became the first American musician to be so honored, in a ceremony overseen by the Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë. Billy Corgan Writing “Spiritual Memoir”

Billy Corgan, frontman for The Smashing Pumpkins and famously cantankerous commentator on the current state of the music industry, is reportedly writing a “spiritual memoir” that contains “plenty of sex and drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.” Though Corgan has insisted that the book “isn’t a rock ‘n’ roll autobiography,” he has already teased some of the eccentric personal anecdotes that readers can expect from a man who’s hobnobbed with the alt rock elite. In an interview with Larry Emdur and Kylie Gillies, the hosts of Good Morning Australia, Corgan revealed that he once hung out in a teepee at Neil Young’s house with Young, Marilyn Manson, Lou Reed, and “probably Harvey Keitel, or something.” We can’t wait to hear the end of that one. In May of last year, Rolling Stone reported that Corgan was already about one-third of the way through the book, having written about 300 pages. At that pace, Corgan could be on track to finish his memoir fairly soon. However, he’ll likely have to put writing on the backburner for the time being, as The Smashing Pumpkins are about to set off on a two-month-long North American tour. Check out the dates below.

Metal Monday: 2011 Metal Christmas List

Christmas: a time in which little boys and girls ask ol’ Saint Nick to fulfill their wildest desires. Thankfully for Santa Claus, kids don’t really wish for that many outlandish things. Metalheads, however, have some pretty crazy wants. Even though Santa might not be real, we’re going to make ourselves a metal Christmas wish-list, just in case. Better safe than sorry, right?  Here’s what we want:

1. We want Wintersun to finally finish Time. Even if you’re not completely stoked about Wintersun, won’t it be nice to finally get rid of the “Wintersun never releasing Time” joke? We think so. Even if it turns out to be another Chinese Democracy, at least we’ll be done with it.

2. We want Metallica to just stop. We love the band and all, but they just aren’t what they used to be. St. Anger was an atrocity, Death Magnetic was better but not great, and Lulu was just painful (even if we sort of gave our thumbs up to them recording with Lou Reed). Just recently they released a B-sides EP from the Death Magnetic material, and it provides almost no hope.

3. We want Axl Rose to continue being a hilarious wreck. It’s sort of a cruel thing to wish for, but it’s just too entertaining seeing more and more clips of Axl Rose totally blowing it on stage. He’s probably still making bank, so what does he care?

4. We want Black Sabbath’s reunion to not suck. In the wake of Dio’s unfortunate passing (RIP), Ozzy and Sabbath have made plans to get back together and play some shows as well as record a new album. I know a lot of people are very cautiously optimistic about this. It’s no secret that Ozzy is a former shell of himself and the entire Sabbath crew is starting to really get up there in age… but it’s the original lineup! Count us in, since this is likely the last shot to see these legends play together. We just don’t want it to be really bad.

You didn’t think RR&R would torture you with anything as tedious as another year-end Best-of list, did you? Granted, we do have a piece in the works that will inform you of some excellent albums you might have missed along the way, but that’s as close as we’re willing to get. Instead, this time around we’ll simply take stock of both the magic moments and the missteps that the last twelve months have brought us—works that delivered delight and dismay in equal measure.

Wire – Red Barked Tree

As the original post-punk outfit, Wire has always lived or died by how well they balanced their arty side with their edgy side. Their discography isn’t without its share of miscalculations in that area, but thirty-four years down the line from their debut album, this one is right on the money.

Gang of Four – Content

The Gang were right on the heels of Wire in first-gen U.K. post-punk, and were just as groundbreaking, but their twenty-first century revitalization has been marred by some dodgy moves. First they re-recorded a batch of their classics on 2005′s Return the Gift, and then they made matters worse with this irksome outing, which is considerably more annoying than the output of the worst third-hand Go4 copyists.

Social Distortion  - Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes

True survivors, old-school SoCal punks Social Distortion have been through every rock & roll tribulation—death, drugs, you name it (How did VH1′s Behind the Music miss these guys?)—but not only are they still going strong, they added some extra bluesy swing and Stonesy swagger to their latest.

Metal Monday: Best And Worst of 2011

Coming up with the 2011 Best and Worst List was an incredibly daunting task because this year has been one of the best for metal that I can remember. The effort left me with ten albums that probably beat out every album released last year. Heck, even my picks for eleven through twenty might be a step above last year’s Top 10. This year boasts great albums from old bands, new bands, and everything in between in just about every sub-genre that a metalhead could come up with. Progressive, death, thrash, black, metalcore, power, sludge, doom, etc.—great albums across the board. If you’re reading this, you probably already know how much metal ruled this year. So, without further ado, let’s countdown the Best and Worst Metal Albums of 2011, shall we?

10. No Help For The Mighty Ones by SubRosa
Not all metal groups that have women members or violins feel cheap and tawdry, and SubRosa are a perfect example. No Help For The Mighty Ones is a great sludge metal offshoot that delivers on of the most unique and re-playable records of 2011.

 

9. The Great Mass by SepticFlesh
Take a really killer death metal band and add in a hefty dose of the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and what do you get? Awesomeness, aka SepticFlesh. We did a Q&A with SepticFlesh after The Great Mass dropped. It’s a pretty solid Q&A, and a better album.

Metal Monday: 2011 In Metal Album Art

The metal world is a world saturated with pretty mediocre and often stereotypical artwork. Graphic satanic imagery, violent imagery, militaristic imagery, fantastical imagery, you get the point. Once you’ve seen enough album covers, you know how rare it is to find something that truly surprises or impresses you. This year seems to have had a really nice mix of fresh, interesting takes on album art as well as wonderfully executed standard-issue album art. This is not to say, however, that 2011 didn’t have its fair share of stinkers. In fact, some of the worst metal album art to come out of the last decade very well may have been this year. We’re going to count down the best and worst of the lot.

Metal Monday: A Long, Hard Look At Lulu

The Lou Reed/Metallica collaboration album Lulu was, without a doubt, the most talked about release in the metal community this year. Months before material was released to the public, many metalheads had already condemned Lulu to be the biggest atrocity to happen to music in a very long time (or, at least since the latest Morbid Angel album). These early naysayers only had their suspicions confirmed when official reviews far and wide critically panned the album.

When I think about just how weighty and ill-received Lulu is, no similar situations in recent memory come to mind. The latest Morbid Angel was pretty ill-received across the board, but not with so much extremity and vitriol as Lulu, which is especially telling considering Metallica already faced career-suicide with St. Anger. Even if Metallica’s career had ended after St. Anger, it would not have mattered much as they’re still responsible for one of the best-selling metal albums in history (the black album) as well as three of the greatest metal albums ever recorded (Ride The Lighting, Master of Puppets and …And Justice For All). So, why do “Loutallica”? The answer is simple: Because they can.

As mentioned before, the most often overlooked detail here—and perhaps the most important factor from a metal perspective—is that Lulu is not a Metallica album. Metallica is featured on a Lou Reed album almost as though they were his studio band. While it’s not definitive just how much say Metallica had in the creative and recording processes, there’s a quote from Kirk Hammett that sums it up completely: it’s “not 100 percent a Metallica record. It’s a recording project, let’s put it that way.” If an artist you respect came up to you and your band and said “Hey, would you like to record this album with me?” would you accept? Of course you would.
