Five years ago, if you were a major label artist and your record leaked ahead of its intended release date there was very little you could do outside of crying foul and complaining online. With time comes wisdom, however, and now the majors are starting to figure out new ways to curve the hurt that comes with big releases getting out early.

It may seem like the obvious move, but the latest development from labels facing major leaks is to turn around and legitimately release the album earlier than anticipated. The theory here is that everyone will hop online to find the leak and will be persuaded to instead purchase it if they see it is already available for sale. It has been a minute since we heard from Kid Cudi, but he’s returned to the spotlight once again with a brand new video for the masses.

Earlier today Cudi released the official video for his latest street single, “King Wizard.” The video follows a similar photo frame concept as his self-directed “Just What I Am” clip and leans heavily on performance footage to flesh out the visuals. It’s not complex, but anything new from Cudi is welcome in our opinion. You can view the video for “King Wizard” below.

Cudi’s new album, Indicud, should arrive in 2013. Stay tuned.

Mumford & Sons – “Lover Of The Light”

It’s hard to tell exactly what Idris Elba is thinking in this video, but it sure is nice to look at. The clip shows a blind man (Elba) who is seemingly thrilled by the sunrise, talking to himself at breakfast, and almost running to his death off the cliffs of Wales. Elba co-directed the intimate video, and does a great job telling a somber story backed by an uplifting song.

Kid Cudi – “Just What I Am” (feat. King Chip)

Don’t be fooled by the frame: This video isn’t quite fine art. Cudi claims “all my videos will be in a baroque frame. I create art, so it will be presented as such. ART IN MOTION.” Um, okay. Unfortunately for Cudi, the visual companion to “Just What I Am” is nothing we haven’t seen a million times before – red solo cups, crowded party, toasting to the good life. Oh well, the song’s not bad.

Swizz Beatz – “Everyday Birthday” (feat. Chris Brown & Ludacris)

Chris Brown wakes up in bed with a “crazy” girl, Luda wakes up in a shower, Swizz is chillin’ on a yacht in Cannes. So begins “Everyday Birthday,” a whirlwind visual feast of bottles poppin’, club hoppin’, and some very evil French girls.

Kid Cudi Signs On To Rom–Com “Two Night Stand”

Kid Cudi has released the official music video for his King Chip assisted single, “Just What I Am.” The video, which serves as Cudi’s directorial debut, features the pair performing their stoner anthem in various locations with a twist of psychedelic reality thrown in for fun. You can view the video below.

Cudi is due to release his new album, Indicud, sometime in the near future. We will bring you details on the his release plans as soon as information begins to surface.

Pharell tried it.  Timbaland took a stab too.  Kanye perfected it.  Hit Boy will continue the trend.  The transition from super-producer toartist is no easy trek.

Chauncey Hollis, the man behind the beats, is ready to leave the boards behind and embark on his own journey toward rap superstardom. Fresh off his über-successful hit, “Niggas In Paris” Hit Boy made it clear he was ready to show the world he can rap too.

Last week, he dropped his free debut offering, HITstory, from his new label home on his House Of Hits website.

The producer-turned rapper signed to Kanye’s label, G.O.O.D. Music in May. “I’m just making music with them, so stuff will end up where it is supposed to,” he told MTV News. “That’s family and they’re the best in the world in my opinion, so I can’t lose. Being able to get advice from those guys is priceless.”

The 11-track EP features collaboration with label-mates, Big Sean and John Legend as well as Bun B, among others. His first single, “Jay-Z Interview” dropped in June and let fans know he wasn’t fooling around. “Yeah, the sh– I spit like/ ‘What the f— has gotten into you?’/ I got ‘em tuned in like a Jay-Z interview.”

On the album, he displays a broad range of content and creativity; depicting a life of big dreams, big disappointments, and bigger determination. “I knew what I wanted before I had it/ but I always had it I was an addict/ And this room is feelin’ just like an attic/making 10 beats a day and going at it… God damn I was just home/ now I’m number 3 on The Throne/ I had so many emotions, that I had to make it into a song,” he rhymes.  Continue reading ‘Soundcheck: Who Is Hit Boy?’

The 2012 BET Awards were held Sunday night in Los Angeles, setting the tone for a sizzling summer of new music from some of hip-hop’s biggest names. Beyoncé took home the trophy for Best Female R&B Artist while Nicki Minaj nabbed Best Female Hip Hop Artist for the third year in a row.

Whitney Houston was given one final farewell from a group of very talented loved ones including her mother, Cissy Houston, who sang “Bridge Over Troubled Water” to a sobbing crowd. Mariah Carey and Angela Bassett, along with the rest of Houston’s Waiting To Exhale cast mates, also delivered heartfelt tributes.

Performances from Chris Brown, D’Angelo, and Kanye West provided previews for some of this season’s most anticipated releases. Brown’s album, Fortune, was just released on July 3.  Last weekend, Brown was honored at the 2012 BET Awards winning Best Male R&B Artist after he gave a power-packed performance of “Turn Up The Music” and “Don’t Wake Me Up” to a turned up crowd who can’t help but be mesmerized by his unrivaled dance moves and brightly painted bare chest. Spring has almost sprung and with it comes a fresh crop of new music from the likes of Kid Cudi, Wiz Khalifa, Diggy Simmons and Tech N9ne among others.

Cudi’s latest project first caused a stir when the rapper complained his label under shipped the rock-heavy EP, WZRD. In it’s first week, the album took the No. 1 spot on iTunes and sold over 70,000 copies.  Cudi’s current single is heating up radio charts as well, setting him up for a stellar rock tour this summer.

As the warm weather fades away and summer comes to a close, there’s still one thing to look forward to; a new season meansnew music. Now that J. Cole has dropped Cole World: The Sideline Story, and Weezy finally released The Carter IV this month as well, the bar is already set pretty high for this season’s set-lists.  Here are a few projects we can’t wait to get our hands on.

B.o.B. gave fans a taste of what’s to come last week when he released “Strange Clouds”, the first single off his upcoming sophomore album of the same name. While no drop date has been set, the song features Lil Wayne and a markedly more aggressive Bobby Ray.  He told HipHopDX, “Hopefully fans will be able to hear the new album very soon. I’m as impatient for you to hear it as you are. It’s a more mature sound but nothing too experimental,” he said. “It’s a happy medium between the sound of B.o.B Presents: The Adventures of Bobby Ray and the mixtapes, so everyone should be able to enjoy it.”

Drake will release his sophomore effort, Take Care, on October 24 under Young Money Records.  Just last week, he released the cover art to the album with a note to fans:

“Feels like it’s been so long. Is life moving so fast in this generation that when we desire something it begins to move in slow motion? Are we just used to getting what we want right away? Or do we require one another to feel right about all that is going on around us? Maybe our anticipation is justified by the fact that we genuinely cannot wait to share a moment again? Either way, your life and mine are scheduled to meet on October 24…I wouldn’t miss it for the world.”

Neither would we, Drake.  Wonder if this little note was meant to distract fans from the fact that the album was due out October 4, and has been pushed back.  Still, if his singles, “Headlines” and his latest, “Free Spirit” featuring Rick Ross are any indication of what’s to come, it’s definitely worth the wait.
