Sparklehorse’s Mark Linkous takes own life

Mark Linkous

The music industry lost another world-weary hero this week. First Vic Chesnutt, and now Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse— a frequent Chesnutt collaborator. Linkous reportedly died from a self-inflicted stab wound outside a friend’s home in Tennessee. As Sparklehorse, Linkous released 4 studio albums (with a 5th on the way), toured with Radiohead and collaborated with the likes of Tom Waits, PJ Harvey and, most recently, Danger Mouse. The duo was entrenched in a legal dispute with Danger Mouse’s record label, EMI, for the rights to release their album Dark Night of the Soul but recently reached an agreement.

On a personal note, I interviewed Linkous after the release of his stunning 2001 album, It’s a Wonderful Life, at his farm in Virginia, and found the man behind the musical genius to be a quiet, gentle soul who entertained all my fumbling questions with grace and kindness. R.I.P., Mark.

Bieber rips off Raaaaaaaandy?

Justin Bieber

Could it be true? Through his alter ego, Raaaaaaaandy (yeah, that’s 8 a’s), Comedian Aziz Ansari has accused Justin Bieber of ripping off his song “Baby, Baby” in the teen idol’s current hit, “Baby.” According to the re-enactment footage, Bieber stole the music and lyrics after pistol whipping poor Raaaaaaaandy in the studio. That’s so Bieber! Check out the Funny Or Die clip here.

Liner Notes: Jahi – “The Realness”

One of hip hop’s unsung heroes is OurStage’s own Alternative Hip Hop Channel stand out, Jahi. The Cleveland MC shrugs off the flash and cash that dominate the mainstream scene, using his music as a way to give back to the community. Not surprisingly, Jahi’s incredible, down-to-earth mentality comes as a breath of fresh air.  With 10 albums under his belt since 2000, Jahi’s hard work and soulful, old school hip hop style has not gone unnoticedhe’s shared the stage with hip hop all stars such as Jay-Z, Outkast and Missy Elliott. “The Realness” is a track that best illustrates Jahi’s dedication to his roots. On this week’s Liner Notes, he explains the story behind the song.

Poptarts: Go Periscope

OSBlog02_PopTarts_MASTER_01Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of months you’ve probably noticed the “latest craze” in pop music. The harmonizing boy bands and sugary pop stars bound to go bad of the’90s and solo acts, like Justin Timberlake and Beyoncé, of the early ’00s need to make way for today’s electro-pop wonders with their club-worthy beats and robotic, auto-tuned vocals. Now, Jay-Z may have declared death to auto-tune, but let’s face it, it’s here to stay. With bands like Owl City and Cobra Starship topping the charts, and T-Pain’s auto-tune iPhone app that puts the power of the voice-altering device in the palm of your hand, there is no way to escape the buzz. And we all know resistance is futile so maybe the best way to deal with it is to embrace it. Go Periscope is a perfect example of a group that has embraced it, and expanded it to include soaring melodies, catchy hooks and a mix of both organic and synthesized sounds.

PS22 chorus does it again

PS22 Chorus

PS22 Chorus

Sometimes it seems like the only news is bad news. If life starts getting you down, know that you can always turn to the kids at PS22 Elementary School on Staten Island to put a smile back on your face. Here they are singing Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind.” Enjoy.

Courtney gets maternal
You know you’re in trouble when your actions leave Courtney Love feeling like a mother. Forget worrying about her own spawn, Love is more bugged out about pop’s sloppy party girl, Ke$ha, who’s just a few years older than her own daughter. In a long series of tweets on her Twitter page, Love voiced her concern that Ke$ha was being “molded into something not her that will fail,” and that she wants “to save her.” Frances Bean, say it with us: Physician, heal thyself.

Killers announce hiatus

Killers

Killers

The Killers have announced they will go on indefinite hiatus after wrapping up their tour in Australia in February. Citing exhaustion after 6 years of steady rocking, the group will take some time to focus on other areas of life that we “normal” people take for granted: watching “Jersey Shore” marathons in our living room with no pants on.

John Mayer’s Rolling Stone interview

John Mayer

John Mayer

Listen to John Mayer as he spins a long and self-gratifying yarn about his near misses with Vegas strippers, how it broke his heart to dump dear old Jen (again) and his love for Rosie Palmer. Put it this way, when he’s not stroking his own ego, he’s stroking something else.

Under Supervision: Music To Watch in 2010

OSBlog02_UnderSuperv_MASTER_01January 1, 2010 signaled the beginning of a new year, a new decade and, for movie fans, another step closer to the release dates of several highly anticipated films. This year many artists are making their mark on the big screen by contributing their music to movie soundtracks in ways that both are completely expected and a bit of a surprise.

The upcoming Tim Burton adaptation of the Lewis Carroll classic Alice in Wonderland is, of course, highly anticipated.  But perhaps more anticipated then the film is the collaboration of Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus and Fall Out Boy’s Pete Wentz as they come together to produce a song for the movie.  Pete has been quoted saying the sound is unlike anything Blink or FOB have done before, so hopefully that’s a good thing.  Also to be included in the soundtrack are All Time Low, Owl City, Robert Smith from The Cure and Franz Ferdinand.  Avril Lavigne will have a new song on the soundtrack as well.  With these pop artists creating the music for the film, the adaptation should sound as thrilling as it looks.
