Drake Announces OVO Fest 2013 Lineup

You know Summer is fast approaching when festival announcements are everywhere you look.

YMCMB member Drake has unveiled plans for the 4th annual OVO Fest in his hometown of Toronto. On August 4th, Frank Ocean and James Blake will be performing. On August 5th, Drake will hit the stage along with various special guests. In years past these “guests” have included the likes of Stevie Wonder, so you know it’s going to be b-i-g.

OVO Fest will be held at Molson Canadian Amphitheater. Tickets go on sale May 21.

Drake’s new album, Nothing Was The Same, is scheduled for release later this year.

Lil Wayne & Birdman Confirm New Big Tymers Album

Lil Wayne went on record earlier this year saying he was becoming bored with rap. In fact, Wayne said after Tha Carter V he would retire from rap for good. Now, in a new interview with MTV, Wayne reveals he has plenty more music on the way (or at least in the works).

Chatting with RapFix live, Lil Wayne and Birdman confirmed that they are indeed working together on a new Big Tymers release. Surprisingly, Mannie Fresh will not be part of the release, but YMCMB heartthrob Drake will. No explanation was offered for Mannie’s departure, but the duo did say that they have yet to record any verses for the release. Click here to view the interview.

Drake Posts “Girls Love Beyonce” Studio Video

The creative process is subjective. No two artists think or create the same way, and it’s in the various methods we all use to develop new ideas that our individuals styles begin to take shape. Drake has rarely let people into those moments of brilliance, but a new video online this morning gives us a glimpse into his studio life in 2013.

A new studio update from Drake has been released featuring the creation of his recent Internet release, “Girls Love Beyonce.” Drake works with friends on lines, finds inspiration in vaporizers, and ultimately lays some bars in the booth. He does not say whether the song will make it onto his new album, but we can only hope. You can view the video below. Continue reading ‘Drake Posts “Girls Love Beyonce” Studio Video’

Drake Streams “Girls Love Beyonce”

Late last week, hip hop superstar Drake took to Twitter to announce that he had two new tracks being released in the coming days. He never told us when to expect those songs or where they would come from, but it’s safe to say one has already found its way online.

Cropping up just after midnight last night, “Girls Love Beyonce” pairs the Canadian crooner with James Fauntleroy on the hook for an ode to the finer sex. The hook borrows from the hit Destiny’s Child song “Say My Name,” but only to the point of making the connection and nothing further, and the verses are filled with the latest chapters of heartache in Drake’s life of luxury. You can stream the track below.

I once read someone describe Drake’s music as having the power to make you miss someone you haven’t even met, and while it may sound ridiculous I must say that is exactly how “Girls Love Beyonce” leaves me. Do you agree? Comment below and let us know. Continue reading ‘Drake Streams “Girls Love Beyonce”’

Snoop Lion Gets Political In “No Guns Allowed” Video

Snoop Lion, whom some of you better know as Snoop Dogg, has released the video for his anti-gun single, “No Guns Allowed.”

Featuring YMCMB artist Drake, as well as his daughter Cori B, the latest offering from Snoop Lion is heavy on the Jamaica influence and even heavier with its lyrical content. Many people associate Snoop with his love of weed and history of gang violence, but ever since his name change the legendary MC has been looking at life from a new perspective. The young man who rose up in the early 90s has grown into a man with a unique view of the world around him. This track is about the rash of gun violence plaguing the world recently, and the video further emphasizes this point with footage from seemingly dozens of gun-related incidents. It’s a tough clip to watch, but the message is one that needs to be heard.

Fun fact: This is not the first time Cori B. has appeared on a track. She may only a be a young teen, but Cori has been making music with and without her father for the last couple years. “No Guns Allowed” is her first major feature, but it’s probably safe to assume it won’t be her last. Kendrick Lamar Performs “Poetic Justice” On Kimmel

Kendrick Lamar has been on an unstoppable rise since early 2012, and last night he took his continually moving promotional train to the stage of Jimmy Kimmel Live for a performance of his new single, “Poetic Justice.”

Appearing sans Drake, who is responsible 1/3 of the verses on the track, Lamar appeared on Kimmel’s recently redesigned outdoor stage accompanied by a full band (including a kickass saxophonist). It’s always a little hard to gauge the strength of a live performance while sipping coffee at your desk the morning after it happens, but the reaction from the crowd makes it clear no one left disappointed. You can view the performance below.

Rumor has it Lamar’s 2012 effort, good kid, mAAd city, is nearing platinum certification. If you enjoy “Poetic Justice,” click here and give the full album a chance. Continue reading ‘Kendrick Lamar Performs “Poetic Justice” On Kimmel’

Stream Drake’s New Freestyle “5AM In Toronto”

Last night Noah “40″ Shebib hinted at new music coming soon on his Twitter, and now we have a brand new cut from Drake himself.

Surfacing shortly after midnight, “5AM In Toronto” is a cut that is unlikely to make Drake’s upcoming album, but it’s still more than deserving of your time. The track was produced by Boi-1da and features Drake going in on everything from MTV’s Hottest MC list, to his seemingly endless beef with Chris Brown. It’s all ego, but it’s backed by facts and experience that is hard to deny. You can stream the verse below: Continue reading ‘Stream Drake’s New Freestyle “5AM In Toronto”’

Review: A$AP Rocky’s ‘Long.Live.A$AP’

After about a year of heightened anticipation, Rakim Mayers – better known as A$AP Rocky – has unveiled his debut album, Long.Live.A$AP. Released on January 15 by A$AP Worldwide, Polo Grounds Music, and RCA Records, the album has made a rather big splash in the urban world and has earned the artist a multi-million dollar record deal, the likes of which have not been seen since 50 Cent began his successful career about a decade ago.

Quickly rising through the cracks of the underground rap world, A$AP Rocky’s debut album has earned him a seat the top at the top of the charts. Long.Live.A$AP features two promoted singles – Goldie, which is the lead single off the album, and “Fuckin’ Problems,” which features guest appearances from rappers Drake, 2 Chainz, and Kendrick Lamar. The two tracks are quite different from each other in terms of style, energy, flow, and lyrical content, but are both very well produced. In fact, the entire album is well structured with heavy emphasis on production value. A$AP’s beats are unique to that of many other rappers, which is perhaps why many have flocked to his music; it’s a new sound.

Unfortunately, guest artists and featured producers aside, A$AP Rocky’s material is perhaps the weakest aspect of the album. A$AP offers next to no lyrical inventiveness, nor is there any actual substance to his lines. He spends most of his verses re-hashing well-worn hip-hop tropes – bragging about his high-fashion tastes, his glamorous life, and supposed street cred, the latter a frequent source of controversy.

Stream: Drake Ft Wiz Khalifa – “From The Bottom” (Remix)

When we heard Drake was releasing a new single we knew it was only a matter of time before the remixes began popping up. That said, we never knew the turnaround would be quite this fast.

Taylor Gang leader Wiz Khalifa has claimed the crown as the first to add a verse to “From The Bottom.” Reactions to the original has been mixed thus far, so maybe the inclusion of a few new bars will sway public opinion. You can stream the remix below. Continue reading ‘Stream: Drake Ft Wiz Khalifa – “From The Bottom” (Remix)’

Previously Unreleased Aaliyah Song “Quit Hatin” Hits The Net

There has been talk for months about the release of a posthumous album from Aaliyah that will be executive produced by Drake and released through Blackground Records. Though that particular release may or may not feature the song that follows, I feel it’s important to note that this is not a one-off leak. There is more Aaliyah material on the way in 2013, and this post is only the beginning.

Wednesday (January 16) marked what would have been Aaliyah’s thirty-fourth birthday. A few members of the press highlighted the date, but most disregarded the day altogether until a never-before-released song entitled “Quit Hatin” began popping up on blogs. The song is a smooth and soulful jam that fits perfectly with the aesthetic of music the songstress had been writing at the time of her death, and to be honest I found it hard to fight off goosebumps while it played. No one ever questioned the great loss felt when news of Aaliyah’s death broke, and after hearing this song it is easy to understand why. Click below to stream “Quit Hatin.”
