Through my daily surfing of the interwebs, I often come across many interesting stories of bands and their travels. There’s really little that surprises me these days—we’ve all seen the funny videos, the unbelievable stories and even the unknown facts of Wikipedia. The Melophobic: Band for Sale
LEAKS AREN’T JUST FOR THE MAJORS
In the early days of the music industry, a leak was as simple as a radio DJ copying an advance release and giving it to a friend. Today within minutes of someone sharing an album online, it’s available to anyone with an internet connection (and sufficient knowledge of where to obtain these files). It has become a daily habit of publications such as Digital Music News to announce leaks and add exposure to the growing leak issues in the industry. These recent leaks include hot shots such as Green Day, Eminem, Wilco and Franz Ferdinand.
Recently there has been a new front to this leak battle; Independent artists are starting to see the same issues as their Major label counterparts. One such example: Tori Amos’ latest album leaked on May 11th, it was due to hit stores only 8 days later.
Luckily, artists are fighting back with other promotions to promote buying their album. Those who pre-ordered Tori’s album on iTunes received a password to order tickets for her summer tour before the general public. The album also came with a DVD video; items like this are not usually included in prerelease leaks giving fans a reason to pick up the album. Artists like Tori also have another thing going for them: a loyal fan base who may download a leak but will still purchase the album for the extras and in support of the artist.
The industry is changing. The classic music industry tactics are futile. Labels must embrace change and adjust tactics for success as independent artists have, or they will soon fall to dust.
Hip-Hop production at its best
In an age where the word “producer” can just mean so many different things, it’s important to distinguish the genre. In the hip-hop world, producers drive the industry by keeping an ever-growing genre replenished with new beats, songs, and sounds. Southern California-based producer/rapper/artist, d.C. is the very definition of “moving forward” in hip-hop. Although he may not be well-establish in the mainstream, d.C. has worked with independent acts all over the country (California, New Mexico, Philadelphia, New York, and even the UK), producing beats, collaborating, and otherwise transforming that “standard hip-hop” sound.
d.C. combines fresh sounds from all genres into his projects, without taking that standard “sampling” approach. Sure, he’s got influences and idols. But d. C. just takes things in a new direction. After winning the Producer/Beats channel at OurStage in November 2008 with his song “Five Steps“, his success continues to grow. It is clear that this producer is definitely one to watch in 2009.

The Earle of Newport
If you thought Steve Earle would be one of the few artists maintaining the acoustic tradition of the Newport Folk Festival, think again.
Though he did open the set with several traditional songs, all bets were off when he brought out a DJ to provide electronic beats. Though I preferred the acoustic stuff, it was cool to see him try something new. Notably, he ended the set with a hip-hop infused rendition of the theme song to The Wire (on which he played a recurring role as an AA group leader).
