Demi Lovato Streams “Made In The USA”

Move over, Miley. There is another angelic-faced pop star hoping to cash in on our love of America and having a good time.

Opening with “Our love runs deep like a Chevy,” the latest from Demi Lovato is about as deep as a puddle. It’s your typical by-the-numbers female lead pop song about love and dedication. The play on the phrase “Made In The USA” is cute enough, but it feels like an afterthought when compared to the rest of the song. It’s as if someone wrote a mediocre song and thought a familiar catchphrase could turn things around. Instead, it just cheapens the whole affair. Stream “Made In The USA” below and hear it for yourself.

“Made In The USA” appears on Demi’s new album, which hits stores May 14. Continue reading ‘Demi Lovato Streams “Made In The USA”’

Demi Lovato Premieres “Heart Attack” Video

After a handful of teasers and late night appearances pop singer Demi Lovato has released the official video for her new single, “Heart Attack.”

The transition from innocent Disney star to adult people take seriously and treat like a professional is historically plagued with pitfalls. Many attempt to grow with their audience (and their own age), but only a select few ever succeed. With “Heart Attack,” Demi Lovato is officially launching the “new her.” This song and video are the equivalent of when Britney Spears went from her innocent schoolgirl look to the scantily clad and confidant woman of her later videos, only with less sexual undertones (and studio manipulation). You can view the video below.

If it were up to me, I’d say “Heart Attack” proves Lovato has what takes to build a sustainable career in pop music. The hook is huge and the beat makes you dance, but neither resort to the top40 standard to achieve this effect with the listener. “Heart Attack” is a song, not just a 120 tempo and twenty-or-so catchy lines, but a real song with emotion and thoughts to convey. If that doesn’t deserve to top the pop charts, I don’t know what does. Continue reading ‘Demi Lovato Premieres “Heart Attack” Video’

Demi Lovato Releases Second Teaser For “Heart Attack” Music Video

Pop songstress Demi Lovato is keeping anticipation for her forthcoming music video premiere high with the release of a second teaser clip.

Debuting ahead of the full clip’s April 9 release, the latest teaser for “Heart Attack” drills home the point that this Demi is a departure from everything we have seen and heard before. The girl we knew has become the woman we’ve yet to meet, and the video for “Heart Attack” seems poised to be her official introduction point. You can view the teaser below. Demi Lovato Performs “Heart Attack” On Jimmy Kimmel Live

Pop songstress Demi Lovato took her new single to the stage of Jimmy Kimmel Live last night and proved to everyone she has Top 40 staying power.

Comparing love to a “Heart Attack,” the latest from Demi Lovato is pure confectionary pop music with just a dash of alternative rock sprinkled on top for edge. People who dislike the music on the radio probably won’t find much to love here, but anyone that can appreciate a great hook from a strong vocalist will definitely find themselves nodding along throughout this performance. You can view the clip below.

So why feature a megastar like Demi Lovato on a blog dedicated to helping artists on the rise? It’s simple, we love Jimmy Kimmel Live. In fact, we’re currently planning the next round of our JKL competition, which will put one lucky OS member on the late night stage before millions of viewers. Stay tuned for details in the coming weeks! Continue reading ‘Demi Lovato Performs “Heart Attack” On Jimmy Kimmel Live’

L.A. Reid Leaving ‘The X Factor’

Just as The X Factor’s second season is coming to a close, Chairman and CEO of Epic Records, L.A. Reid has chosen to step down from his spot in the judge’s chair.

Although his presence resulted in multiple contestant signings to Epic Records, Reid says of his departure, ”I have a company to run that I’ve kind of neglected.” Reid continued, “I have a huge responsibility to a roster of artists, and it’s kind of time for me to stop doing ‘the me’ show and get back to doing ‘the them’ show.”

Among Reid’s upcoming Epic Records projects will be Ciara’s next album and Avril Lavigne’s latest album.

X Factor Renewed For Third Season

I can’t imagine a better way for reality TV junkies to start their Tuesday morning other than reveling in the recently confirmed news that FOX’s X Factor will be returning for a third season.

Though it is still unclear if Britney Spears or Demi Lovato will be back for the third season, FOX’s alternative entertainment president Mike Darnell made a few comments, which seemed to indicate a favorable push towards the two.

“The format changes are working, the contestants are unbelievably talented, and Britney and Demi — alongside Simon and L.A. Reid — have brought an incredibly fun new chemistry to the judges’ panel that our fans really love.”

Also weighing in on the renewal was everyone’s favorite love to hate him judge, Simon Cowell.

“I couldn’t be happier about The X Factor already being renewed for another season,” Cowell said, “I am so proud of the show and the team who have made it this season. I want to thank our incredible sponsors for their support and creativity, and FOX for going out of their way to do everything they can to make this show a success. Most importantly, I have to personally thank our amazing fans for the support and enthusiasm they have given to The X Factor. Our main commitment will always be to find great talent, and let’s not forget, we are now days away from our first live shows. The gloves are off! Expect fireworks!”

X Factor Boot Camp Kicks Off; Nearly Half Of Contestants Axed

The X Factor is as much a ratings seeking show as anything these days, priding itself no longer on just the talent it showcases, but catfights, crying and breakdowns. With judge Britney Spears commenting, “We’re gonna push them to their limits,” it’s only reasonable to expect a bit of on air tension when the family sits down to watch on Wednesday and Thursday nights.

After settling down inside a swanky Miami hotel, the contestants were bused out to their performance site, and one by one, all 120 of them went in front of the judges, knees shaking and voices set to impress. After all, each performance is only the biggest of their life. Check out the scoop after the jump.

Sound and Vision: An ‘American Idol’ Wish List– Who Should Replace Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler?

You couldn’t pay me to be an American Idol bigwig right now. The show is about to face its greatest challenge since the 2008 battle of the Davids (Cook and Archuleta).

The producers and the Fox network already have to worry about sagging ratings (the average viewership in season 11 dropped 23 percent to below 20 million for the first time in nine years, and the show fell from No. 1 for the season—to No. 2—for the first time since 2005), not to mention less commercially viable Idols and external competition from The Voice, The X Factor, and pretty much any reality show that promises to make a nobody a star.

Now, the producers have to deal with pleasing Mariah Carey, who has signed on as a judge next season, replacing either Jennifer Lopez or Steven Tyler, both of whom left after two years in order to focus full-time on their music careers (and in the case of Lopez, her “acting” career, too).

I once interviewed Carey for an Us Weekly cover story, and I found her to be warm, intelligent and surprisingly funny, but she’s a diva through and through. (She actually walked into the living room of her New York City hotel suite cradling her miniature dog!) Idol will reportedly pay her a very diva-like sum of between $12 and $17 million a season (a hefty and not altogether worthwhile expense, considering that Carey is well past her pop heyday), and I don’t even want to think about her list of perks and demands.

Meanwhile, there are murmurings that Randy Jackson, the last remaining original judge, currently in contract negotiations, might be moving from the judge’s table into more of a mentoring role, in an attempt to revamp the show for season 12, launching in January of 2013. Sadly, that restructuring doesn’t extend to Ryan Seacrest, the inexplicably still-highly employable host, who has signed up for another two years at a pay rate of $15 million per season. Is it too late to invite ex-judge Ellen DeGeneres back for the job they should have offered her in the first place?

Sound and Vision: Why Judging a TV Star Search Is More Valuable Than Winning One

The votes were counted and Phillip Phillips was crowned the 11th American Idol on May 23. So what’s next?

If this is going to be just another case of recent history repeating, a first blush of modest success (his Idol winner’s single “Home” entered Billboard’s Hot 100 at No. 10, with 278,000 downloads), maybe even a platinum post-Idol album (like his predecessor, Scotty McCreery), then… nothing much. Unlike American Idol‘s early seasons, which made durable stars out of Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, taking the grand prize no longer comes with guaranteed gold or platinum (if only for one album).

Even Adam Lambert, Idol‘s eighth runner-up and the show’s lone international star launch in the past several seasons, is in the throes of a sophomore slump. Although Trespassing, his second studio album, released on May 15, entered Billboard’s Top 200 album chart at No. 1, it did so with only 77,000 copies sold its first week. That’s 120,000 less than his 2009 debut, For Your Entertainment, and the lowest one-week total for a No. 1 album since last August, when Adele’s 21 sold 76,000 copies in its 12th non-consecutive week at No. 1.
