HOW TO GET A COLLEGE GIG

os_howto_c_052709

When you’re in a band, you know the blood, sweat and tears involved in stalking club owners and booking agents to confirm dates, searching high and low for cool opening acts, walking all over creation to put up flyers, loading gear in and out of  your van only to open that golden envelope at the end of the night to find out you made … 30 bucks?

Unless you’re an established act with a diehard following, club shows can be a financial crapshoot. Lucky for you, colleges and universities usually pay a set fee that can be substantially higher than what you’ll make at a club even with a packed house. Every college is different, but you can generally expect anywhere from $500 to upwards of $3,000 for a gig depending on how high your profile is. So how do you go about getting a show on campus? There’s no magical formula, but here are some DIY tips to get you started in the right direction.

  1. Contact the college radio station. Even if they’re not in charge of booking acts, they can probably direct you to the right person at the Office of Student Affairs, Campus Life or the like. We let Wikipedia do the legwork and found this handy list of college radio stations in markets all over the U.S. and beyond.
  2. Look at where similar artists are playing. While you’re out there in cyberspace, take a few minutes to check out other band’s tour schedules and see which colleges they are booking.
  3. Follow up, follow up, follow up. The ball is always in your court, so make sure you’re persistent. Get personal email addresses and phone numbers and stay in touch. Ask the college radio station to spin your music. Keep your contacts in the loop on album releases, big shows and any press you’ve garnered. Even the slightest success you’ve had will make you that much more attractive to the person booking the shows.

Off to College? Don’t forget your (FREE) tunes!

www.ourstage.com
DOWNLOAD THESE SONGS AND MORE!

Whats up? I’m Josh and I am OurStage’s new production intern. (see also: Quinn and Alyssa’s gofer) I’m studying at Northeastern University (GO HUSKIES!) and with all the students moving back to campus I thought I’d put together a little “Back To School Playlist.” Think of it as the soundtrack to your life…ok maybe not, but I mean, if you did, I’d be like flattered and stuff…

String of Pearls” by Skytone
So, at some point last year I realized I was the only person campus walking to class without headphones securely fastened to my head. After a little internal debate I decided to try it out. The results? Overwhelming success. Jamming en route to my ‘History of Boring 101‘ lecture kept me awake while ‘Professor Windbag‘ droned on about the ‘Ancient Civilization of ‘Whoozawhatavia.’ Just make sure you aren’t listening to Skytone in class. Take it from someone who found out the hard way… (10 extra pages? C’mon professor… What’s that? No, no I don’t want you to make it 20 pages. Sorry sir, it won’t happen again…)

Re Arrange” by The Perfect Gentleman
Sometimes spontaneous dance parties are an absolute necessity. My advice? Get a disco ball, invite over the cute girl/guy who lives upstairs, turn up The Perfect Gentleman, and get your groove thing on. Or take it to the common room and invite the rest of the dorm.

Falling Out of Love Again” by Phil Common
::SIGH:: It’s like a universal law of the college experience, your heart is gonna get broken sooner or later, and if you’re like me it will probably be more than once, or twice…or three times. ::DOUBLE SIGH:: But I’ve got you covered. Get a box of tissues, put on some Phil Common, and have a good cry. It’s cool guys, your roommate won’t think any different of you… (NOTE: Experiences may differ)

Seeds Of Decay” by Divination
So don’t tell my pretentious indie friends that I’m a closet metal head. Sometimes its just been a long day: I’m tired, I don’t want to study, maybe I wanna scream at the top of my lungs? Well I put on some Divination crank it to 11 and ROCK THE F*CK OUT!!! If you can hear the neighbors telling you to quiet down the music isn’t loud enough!

Kathy’s Waltz” by Geoff Lapp Trio
“I guess it’s time to do homework,” you say? Well, stop watching SportsCenter/Gossip Girl re-runs and get down to business. Chill out to some Geoff Lapp Trio and get educated. Who knows? Maybe you’ll even convince your roommate that you’re some sort of heady intellectual or something…
