Afternoon Ephemera: The Replacements Return, Dylan and Dawes, Weiland Responds, NIN News

Internet love song: Scott Weiland wonders how he can be fired from Stone Temple Pilots, and says he first heard about it in the press this morning. Rolling Stone:

I learned of my supposed “termination” from Stone Temple Pilots this morning by reading about it in the press.  Not sure how I can be “terminated” from a band that I founded, fronted and co-wrote many of its biggest hits, but that’s something for the lawyers to figure out.  In the meantime, I’m looking forward to seeing all of my fans on my solo tour which starts this Friday.

Dylan and the Dawes: Dawes announced on Twitter today that they will be opening up for Bob Dylan on his next tour. We predict backstage mayhem. Hidden Track has the dates.

New Nine Inch Nails news: Lots happening with Trent Reznor‘s venerable band lately. In addition to adding guitarist Adrian Belew (wow, cool), the lineup now includes Eric Avery of Jane’s Addiction and Josh Eustis of Telefon Tel Aviv. Now comes news of some tour dates. Spin reports the band will hit a few international festivals before kicking off an arena tour this fall.

Return of The ‘Mats: After 23 years, beloved rockers The Replacements have released a new song. It’s a Gordon Lightfoot cover (obv.) called “I’m Not Sayin’,” and it’s streaming at Pitchfork. Chris Mars, Paul Westerberg, and Tommy Stinson reunited to record a 7-inch EP called Songs For Slim, to benefit their ailing former bandmate Slim Dunlap, who suffered a stroke last year. The band pressed just 250 copies of the EP and auctioned them off to raise over $100k. Nice.

Soundtrax: Old Fashioned Punk-Rock

Soundtrax: Old Fashioned Punk-Rock by OurStage on Grooveshark

There’s nothing like a little old fashioned punk-rock to really get the blood flowing, am I right? It inspires raw emotion, feelings of pure chaos and undeniable passion. It harkens to the days when CBGB’s was an iconic rock club and not a high-end retailer. When the Chelsea Hotel housed artists of all kinds from Bob Dylan to Charles Bukowski, Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, and of course Sid Vicious.

I’ll tell you one thing. The Buzzcocks got it right when they sang “And although this may sound strange, my future and my past are presently disarranged” (a song coincidentally is on this playlist). Because right now, we’re taking you back to the ’70s, with a little dose of the ’80s, and present day for good measure. Rock on.

Bob Dylan Updates His Facebook Status For The First Time Ever!

Ladies and gentleman, we’d like to welcome oldtimer Bob Dylan to the internet. The master of folk has finally figured out how to work that confounded computing machine and has even managed to personally update his facebook status for the first time ever!

What special occasion could possibly compel the legendary geezer to dust off his monitor and update the ol’ ‘book? Why, the election of course! Before Obama’s win was confirmed, Dylan took to his profile with the following message:

“Here’s pretty close to what I said last night in Madison. I said from the stage that we had to play better than good tonight, that the president was here today and he’s a hard act to follow. Also, that we’re not fooled by the media and we think it’s going to be a landslide. That’s pretty much all of it.”

Huh, not bad I guess. Better than my first status update at least: “Hot Pockets r good but I always burn my mouth :( lol.” Looks like Dylan is finally becoming one of us. Let’s just hope we don’t lost him to rage face memes and pictures of cats (He strikes me as a FarmVille kinda guy)… It’s a slippery slope from here…

Sound And Vision: Will Nicki Minaj Vs. Mariah Carey Hurt the Rapper While Helping “American Idol”?

“I’m gonna knock you out…. I told you I’m not f**kin’ putting up with her f**kin’ highness over there!”

It’s not exactly prose worthy of Bob Dylan, or even Eminem, her sometime partner in rhyme, but with those fighting words, rapper Nicki Minaj recently helped make American Idol hot for the first time in years. She hurled them directly at Mariah Carey on October 2 in Charlotte, N.C., during the audition rounds for season 12 of Idol, which kicks off in January of 2013. Riffs, Rants & Rumors: Elliott Murphy, Last of the Rock Stars

What do Jane Fonda, Johnny Depp, Gianni Versace, and Elliott Murphy have in common? They’re all among the recipients of France’s Médaille de Vermeil de la Ville de Paris, a high cultural honor that’s presented by the mayor of Paris himself. The most recent singer to be awarded the medal was French chanson legend Juliette Greco, but on October 1, New York-born singer/songwriter Murphy became the first American musician to be so honored, in a ceremony overseen by the Mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoë. Exclusive Q and A: Chris Carrabba Talks ‘Penny Black,’ Reuniting With Further Seems Forever

It’s been more than a decade since Further Seems Forever recorded new material with their original vocalist, Chris Carrabba. After Carrabba left the band in 2000 to pursue his solo project, Dashboard Confessional, his shoes were competently filled by subsequent vocalists Jason Gleason and Jon Bunch. Still, hardcore fans held out hope that someday the original FSF lineup would reunite and maybe even release new songs. To the elation of all of those who have waited a long decade, Carrabba and Further Seems Forever have finally joined forces once again and are set to release Penny Black, the band’s fourth album, this October. We caught up with Carrabba to talk about the band’s older material, the meaning behind the album title, and the enduring artists that he aspires to emulate.

OS: What influenced the band’s decision to release Penny Black on Rise Records?

Chris Carrabba: We had heard such great things about how the label was run and the people who run the label.  There are a lot of bands on the label that I like a lot and some of them are my friends and they all raved about their experience being on Rise.

OS: The Penny Black was an early British postage stamp from the 1840s. What connection does that idea have to the lyrical subject matter of the album?

CC: I was reading a book that was set in the mid 1800’s and a major theme in it was the tendency of those in power to be driven only by the desire to amass more power.  The stamp wasn’t mentioned in it but I connected them for some reason.  The stamp was a paradigm shift in communication.  It made the world smaller, like the Internet has done in our era, but it also gave those in power to spread that power wider and wider

One Half Of Tim & Eric Managed To Out-Dylan Bob Dylan With “Bob Dylan’s Titanic”

Is the music world big enough for two 10 minute+ long Dylan-esque songs about the Titanic?

Bob Dylan probably didn’t realize that he was throwing down the gauntlet when he let it slip that the title track off of his upcoming album Tempest was to be an epic 14 minute long murder ballad about the infamous maiden voyage of the Titanic. But Tim Heidecker wasn’t going to let that call to action go unanswered.

Heidecker, the blonder half of absurdist comedy duo Tim & Eric, has myriad creative interests outside of his day job. He has his own podcast with comedian Gregg Turkington (aka Tim & Eric alum Neil Hamburger). He has a burgeoning independent film career. He’s helped direct a couple of Old Spice commercials. And he’s also a musician. That said, very few were prepared when Heidecker announced that he was to put out a solo release, Titanic and Other Songs, which is set to feature a 15 minute long murder ballad about the Titanic. The song is called “Bob Dylan’s Titanic.” Sound familiar?

Wanting to “see if I could beat the master to it,” Heidecker managed to get his Titanic murder ballad out before Dylan did. Going far beyond Dylan’s “Tempest” in scope – Dylan just covers the sinking, Heidecker covers the Titanic’s history through to the 1996 movie of the same name – it really is something to behold.

Your Country’s Right Here: Lucinda Williams’ New Music Shines Bright

Lucinda Williams was already a multi-GRAMMY Award-winning singer songwriter in 2009 when she married music industry insider Tom Overby on stage at her Minneapolis concert prior to her .

But finding the man she calls “my best friend, my soul mate,” actually bumped her artistry up even more levels. You’ll hear that on her GRAMMY Award- nominated album Blessed and perhaps even more so in her live performances, especially when she performs songs she has just written and will soon record. At a recent sold-out show at the Birchmere Music Hall in Alexandria, Va., just outside of Washington, D.C., Williams did the near impossible. She and her musical partner for the evening, virtuoso guitarist Doug Pettibone, performed a two-hour show before a packed room that had the intimacy of a house concert.
