As the year comes to a close, Punk On The Rocks would like to take a little time out to celebrate some of the stars of this years OurStage Punk Channel. We’ve rounded up a list of chart topping newbies and old favorites. Find out who topped the best new artist list and who was 2009’s winningest punk band below:
Best New Artists:
These artists competed in the OurStage Punk Channel for the first time this year.

The Roughneck Riot
In addition to catching the ears of the OurStage community by shooting up to the top the the September Punk channel, Warrington, UK Celtic punks The Roughenck Riot ended 2009 by playing with one of their idols, Shane Macgowan of The Pogues. If you’re looking for some rowdy drinking music this holiday season, check out “Travelin’ Man” from their Drain The Bar EP.
Mystic Knights of the Cobra
With two badass leading lady vocalists and a killer guitar sound, it’s no wonder Rodeo, California’s Mystic Knights of the Cobra can count Green Day’s Billy Joe Armstrong as a fan (He called them “…This freak show of a band that’s …doing stuff that’s far more creative than anything I’ve seen in a really long time”). Check out “Funday Steve” to hear what all of the fuss is about.
The Resignators
Melbourne, Australia Psychoska band The Resignators took hybrid their rock/ska/reggae sound to the number one spot on the OurStage Punk Channel in July 2009 with “Emotional – Its All Good,” but my favorite song of theirs is the totally silly fast food-centric “Taco Burrito.”
In addition to Best New Artist, this year, we’re giving out the first ever Punk On The Rocks MVP (Most Valuable Punk) Award. The MVP is the artist who has dominated the OurStage Punk Channel with the most Top 10 finishes in 2009. This year’s 2009 Punk on the Rocks MVP award goes to …The Bastard Suns!
Punk On The Rocks MVP 2009 The Bastard Suns
With five finishes in the top 10 of the OurStage Punk Channel, 2009 has been the year of the Bastard Suns. Along with “My Pint” finishing in the Punk Channel top 10 five times, the band released a new album Here Comes The Suns and went on their first coast to coast tour. Here’s hoping the next year brings us more great music from the Bastard Suns! Honorable mention goes to Native June with 4 Top 10 finishes and Ruthe Charles with 3 Top 10 finishes.
