Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Presenters Announced

Rock-and-Roll-Hall-of-Fame-LogoWe already knew the artists who will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for 2014, but now we know who will be inducting them.

Michael Stipe will induct Nirvana. Makes sense. Kurt Cobain expressed his deep admiration for close friend Stipe on more than one occasion.

Bruce Springsteen will induct his E Street Band. The Boss is already in the Hall solo. No-brainer.

Tom Morello will induct KISS, because someone has to do it.

Chris Martin will consciously couple the Hall of Fame with Peter Gabriel. OK?

Glenn Frey will induct Linda Ronstadt. That’s a good one – the Eagles started out as her backing band.

Questlove will induct Hall and Oates, which is pretty cool. The Roots’ mainman and walking music encyclopedia will hopefully shine a nice light on the often overlooked rock and soul duo.

Peter Asher, of ’60s duo Peter and Gordon, as well as a noted producer (of James Taylor, among others), will induct Beatles manager Brian Epstein and Rolling Stones manager Andrew Loog Oldham.

Salman Rushdie will induct Cat Stevens. No, I’m kidding, no word yet on who has that honor.

The ceremony will take place on April 10th and will be aired on HBO on May 31st. (h/t CoS)

More Flaming Lips / Pink Floyd Action

the-Flaming-Lips[UPDATED BELOW]
Not content with their start-to-finish cover of Pink Floyd‘s landmark LP Dark Side Of The Moon from a few years ago, The Flaming Lips have now recorded and released a “companion” piece to that record, intended to be played simultaneously. It is called Flaming Side of the Moon.

I know what I’m doing today.

Dark Side is an album rife with its own mythology, which includes the details behind the making of the record, the subject matter of the songs, the mysterious audio snippets buried throughout, and, of course, the supposed connection to The Wizard of Oz (which is certainly coincidental at best, though the Lips say this release does indeed sync up). So it is a prime target for further creative explorations by sonic adventurers The Flaming Lips, who are no strangers to this kind of multidimensional, puzzle-piece recording, having created their own Zaireeka, an album released in 1997 on four different discs, also intended to be played simultaneously.

[UPDATE: The Flaming Lips report this was an April Fool's Day joke. So, everything above, and it's all real, and they did it, but... just kidding?]

Pixies Want YOU To Design A Poster

The PixiesWith the release of Indie City, their first studio album in over 20 years, Pixies (officially Black Francis, Joey Santiago, and David Lovering) are tapping their fan base for some creative contributions. Specifically, the revered alt rock pioneers are looking for a poster design, measuring 11×17 and including the Pixies logo and the album title. One design will be selected by the band to be used as “a limited-edition, commemorative lithograph print that will be offered as a bonus item with the purchase of the band’s new album at independent music stores.” The winner will get $500 and an autographed copy of the poster.

Get your design in by April 10th. Look here.

Indie City will be out in time for Record Store Day on April 19th (official release date is a week later) and compiles material from two recent EPs plus three new songs.

Porcupine’s New EP, ‘I See Sound’

I SEE SOUNDWisconsin’s Porcupine makes  positively mesmerizing guitar rock. There is a bit of a throwback element to their sound, with nods to ’90s pioneers like Built To Spill and Swervedriver. They veer away from getting too shoegazy, with just the right amount of hazy fuzz, in favor of driving syncopation and angular melodies and changes. And now they’ve released a brand new EP entitled I See Sound, via Riot House Records. Watch this studio video for “Worst Case Scenario:”

Why Is Christine McVie Re-joining Fleetwood Mac?

Fleetwood MacFleetwood Mac is touring again and, unlike recent reunions for the ’70s mega-stars, this one will include keyboardist, singer, and songwriter Christine McVie. McVie was one of the primary creative forces behind the groups mainstream success, contributing hits like “Don’t Stop,” “You Make Loving Fun,” and later singles “Little Lies” and “Everywhere.”

The band slowly dissolved through the end of the ’80s, reuniting for President Bill Clinton‘s inauguration and then later for a concert special, tour, and record called The Dance, which was a big success. Christine McVie left the group after that and they carried on without her, to mixed results. Now she’s back, which is nice for fans, and it’s obviously better to have her there than not. But you have to wonder why she’d do this, after having successfully, and seemingly wisely, extricated herself. It could be for the money, but I’m not so sure. I think when your public identity is so firmly defined by one thing – in this case, Fleetwood Mac – it must be hard to just say it’s over forever. And when you start to face mortality – McVie’s ex-husband and Mac bassist John McVie has recently battled cancer – the desire to revisit that one thing must be compelling. Finally, as McVie told People magazine, the band’s chemistry is truly and undeniably special. I’d like to think that it’s all just for the fun of it. So while I respected her for getting out while the getting was good, I have to assume the purest motives, and respect that, too.

The tour starts September 29 in Minneapolis. Maybe it will be awesome.
