The Venues:
The Spot in Wilmington is a volunteer-run venue dedicated to hosting local musicians and artists. Need to tune up your wheels? The Spot also shares a location with the Urban Bike Project, a non-profit bicycle reclamation and education group. Also in Wilmington is Mojo 13. The venue’s MySpace page states that Mojo 13 is “…looking to become the home away from home for the alternative-minded music community here in Delaware.” They offer regular open mics and a solid line up of indie rock, alt. rock, metal and punk.
The Music:
Khanway – Khanway is, in his own words, “as sick as it gets/lyrically, I’m like leukemia and swine flu mixed.” This multi-tasking Delaware MC is the co-owner of his record label Survival Entertainment in addition to being an artist and a producer. Khanway is currently working on two albums — Para Bellum, set for release this year after it’s digital release in ’09, and Anomaly, which is slated for release 1/1/11.
My Name Is Drew – Most bands would be hard-pressed to write, self-record and self-release a full length debut album in just over a year and live to tell the tale. Eclectic alternative/indie rockers My Name Is Drew aren’t like most bands. The band credits their success to the great friendship the members share. Check out the results of their hard work in the playlist below.
Kyle Swartzwelder – If you live on the east coast, you might have seen country-tinged folkie Kyle Swartzwelder last year as he promoted his 2008 self-titled album, which earned him a nomination for Best Album of the Year from Wilmington’s 93.7FM WSTW. Kyle is currently recording a new album for 13:13 Records and hosting a popular open mic at the Burlap and Bean in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
