Break out the goofy glasses and telecaster! This week we’re paying homage to one of rock music’s pioneers: Nashville’s Prattle on Rick. Songwriter Patrick Rickelton’s one-man project explores his various childhood musical influences. Patrick was kind enough to share with us the story behind his track “Reminiscing”— a tribute to his hero, Buddy Holly:

Buddy Holly is such a compelling figure when one looks at 1950s pop music. He may well be the very first indie artist. In three years he produced a stunning variety of recordings—classic rockabilly, lush orchestral pop music and the sweetest, simplest most economical love songs ever —while his contemporaries seemed to be recording the same darn song over and and over again. I see him as a role model to the modern songwriter — a reminder to make the music that moves you and not just the music you think people want to hear.
“Reminiscing” is an ode to Buddy Holly, an old friend I never had the pleasure to meet, and the embodiment of America’s spirit of exuberance, independence and acceptance. It’s also a tribute to those enduring recordings from Norman Petty’s spare room in Clovis, NM.
By the way, Verse 4 is comprised completely of Buddy Holly song titles; I thought I might as well, since I had already ripped off 3 or 4 BH tunes by that point in the song.
