March 19, 2009 Awake! Awake! - We've Been Strangers Charles McClain 19.MAR.09 Rating: 4 Pulses We’ve Been Strangers? How about: We Have the Facts and We’re Voting Yes. My favorite Death Cab ride aside, this approaches the nexus of indie rock power balladry with a tinge of everyone’s favorite Postal Service employee. If Gibbard-dom is the aim, Awake! Awake! has almost ascended such great heights. Did I mention my first impression? Mmm . . . wait for it . . . DEATHCABFORCUTIE. Seriously, there is a lot here to like. The dynamics ebb and soar, maintaining an integrity that allows you to go along with it without feeling an emotional affront. “The Dawn” is a perfect opener. Jarring, percussive simplicity punctuated one measure in with a repeated guitar line draws you in. The vocals rise and the tension builds into a crescendo of momentary feedback, then the familiar dirge of shoegaze reverb. Sadly, it’s a little downhill from there. The fare becomes a little more conventional, the lyrics a little obtuse and stilted; just a little. There appears to be a pervading sense of Protestant guilt between the lines. The exception is “All I Hold.” Again, they go back to basics. An acoustic guitar drones, a toy piano sings along on the chorus and something akin to a B-movie spaceship seems to be landing in the background. Tape flutter or extra-terrestrials, I like me some noise. It all decays into the twangy sparseness of “The Fall/The Flight” and we’re back on safer footing. Awake! Awake! rock a little harder than I’ve let on, primarily because I see that as their biggest weakness. My favorite moments on this record are the calm before the storm. The simple dynamic of rhythm and melody are a real talent. It’s a place to hang their hat among quasi- and recycled second-generation Christian bands like MuteMath, Switchfoot and Copeland.

Album: We’ve Been Strangers Reviewer: Tyler Hess Hailing from the incredibly cool name of a town, Murfreesboro, Tennessee, this band has brought forth a solid effort of alt-rock along the lines of other indie bands that are known around here such as My Epic and Sleep For Sleepers, with vocals that often go into more of a Number One Gun/Kessler/Esterlyn type sound. To tell you the truth, I had so many bands that I wanted to compare these guys to simply because they refuse to stick to just one sound for the entirety of the album. They do have a sound that they gravitate back to, but they do get out of line on several occasions. Let’s just say that they have a full sound when they are doing it right and the songs tend to build up from where they start, with vocals that soar on eagle’s wings when they choose to fly. We’ve Been Strangers starts off with a nice, but deceptive instrumental track, that was honestly hard for me to get past, much to my dismay. I thought the whole album was going to be like the first track, so I kept losing interest before finally giving the whole thing a go. Don’t let this happen to you. I’m not saying that the instrumental song is bad, I’m just saying it is easy to get distracted sometimes. The second track, “Daylight”, kicks the album into high gear, however, with a rocking song about stepping out of where we are and being able to change. When the next song, “Ocean” comes up, we can quickly see that the band likes to mix things up. Sometimes that is a good thing, sometimes not so much. Here we see them pull it back into a more straightforward rock song after a strange intro, but it also typifies a band trying to find itself somewhat. “Quickly I Take My Time” is up after that, slowing things up just a tad, while being possible the most straight forward of the songs, speaking of letting go of insecurities, selfishness and faithlessness, letting God do that work. The following track, “Of Architects and Entropy” not only proves that they know big words that few people use outside of a classroom, but is a shining example of using a picture to create a response, much like one could see in the book of Lamentations, exemplifying the difference between our foundation being in what we can build and what God can build in us. After that we are taken to an acoustic song, “All I Hold”, which feels a bit strained, but has a nice chorus to it, making me wonder what it would have felt like if it had a closer sound to the previous songs on the album. “The Fall / The Flight” begins the latter third of the record and strangely reminds me of one of the slower, more experimental tracks that “Newsboys” did on their “Love Liberty Disco” and Step Up To The Microphone” albums. “The Coming Night” has probably the most radio ready chorus, something worthy of Christian rock radio stations, but shows that they still have a little bit of cleaning up to do before they get there. “Daylight Outro”, in case you couldn’t tell, takes us home with the words that make up the album name and has a “Leeland” feel to it. Looking at this song by song is telling me a lot, in case you didn’t pick up on it. This music is full of promise instrumentally, full of potential vocally and full of hope spiritually. If they keep working on it, they can certainly take a step up in the biz. 7.5/10

The Hidden Mixed Tape “Ocean” – Awake! Awake! 15 03 2010 Is lowlight a word? Like the opposite of highlight? I’m using it regardless. After many lowlights today, there was one highlight, and that was my discovery of Awake! Awake!. Oooh, I think I’m messing up punctuation now too. This is why I teach math. Rambling now. Sorry. If you read this blog, you may have noticed I am a big fan of Noisetrade.com. Not only is this website free, but it is a great way to find new artists and hear their music. While browsing I decided to check out Awake! Awake! and am glad I did. I heard one song on their Myspace and decided to click away. A couple of clicks later and I had TEN new songs on my iPod. Ten! So I usually decide I really like an artist when I have it playing in the background and am busy doing stuff and suddenly and like “What is this song because I love it!”. Well, I had this reaction with a handful of my new songs. It’s like a perfect soundtrack. My personal favorites are “Ocean” (this song is ridiculously good), “Daylight” and “The Fall/The Flight”. Here are two of them in a song/video format. (I gave you a fast and a slow one for variation.) Also, let me mention that these guys messaged me and were extremely kind! I love nice people. November 6, 2008 We've Been Strangers Awake! Awake! When searching for new tunes to check out, a friend I once referred to as a music guru told me about noisetrade.com. I'd downloaded an album through the site once before but never realized the nature of its content. Artists are able to upload songs or albums to the site, offering the tracks for either free or "whatever you want to pay." To download for free, one only needs to suggest the artist to five people through e-mail. I located Awake! Awake!'s "We've Been Strangers" on NoiseTrade and was surprised to find the 10-track album in the company of four-song EPs. The band is solid pop-rock, a dash of Jimmy Eat World and Switchfoot mixed with the fallen exclamation points of Panic at the Disco. It is soundtrack music: pleasant, catchy and perfect to set the scene, whether it's a loud party or a quiet scene with Mandy Moore crying. I suppose it doesn't have to be Mandy Moore who is crying, but some actress looking out a window with tears in her eyes is the mental image that forms during songs such as "The Fall/The Flight." Awake! http://www.myspace.com/awakeawake Label: Downloads only Tracks: 9 Tracks/35:27min This five piece hailing from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, have been receiving pretty good reviews in their local press. So I was looking forward to hearing what they had to offer. This time I wasn’t disappointed. Here is a bit of background first. The rock/new-wave/power-pop/pop-rock quintet hail from Murfreesboro, TN, with the current line up being David Johnson - Lead Vocals; Andrew Goodwin - Guitar, Vocals; Blake Noel - Drums, Hollerin; Dan Johnson - Guitar, Vocals; Andrew Kaiser - Bass, Vocals. The former lineup had Joshua Parker on Guitar, Vocals and Chad Chrisman on Bass (who both helped record the debut album, but left the band on good terms in 2008). With influences such as Jimmy Eat World, Mute Math, Switchfoot, Copeland, and the Cure you can expect to hear some great tunes on this their second release. I am listening to track two, Daylight, right now, and I swear it sounds vocally like Anberlin, and rhythmically like Mute Math mashed into their own sound. The whole album is like this. There are so many bands you can compare Awake! Awake! to, simply because they have created their own unique sound. The blurb on their myspace page says, “With expertly-crafted guitar riffs, soaring vocals, skillful and steady rhythms, and poignant lyrics, Awake! Awake! has a knack for creating song after song that continues to resonate with their listeners.” I agree. They remind me of when I first heard Anberlin. I bought Anberlins’ second album on a recommendation. They actually didn’t get me the first listen. However, after a couple I was hooked. Awake! Awake! Did the same. But after a few listens I think they are pretty amazing. One of the amazing things to me is that this is an indie project. Amazing because it is well engineered and produced; vocals are there to hear, guitars a clear not fuzzy, bass is not to low or distorted. Not only is it well produced and engineered, but the guys from Awake! Awake! have created a well-crafted album musically and lyrically. For a sophomore release this disc shows a lot of maturity musically and lyrically. A sample of their lyrics is from the third track called Oceans (metaphoric for God/Holy Spirit): Coming closer Fading further away All with the same glimpse of the unknown As waves crash over and over They drench your soul They soak your soul And you just don't know how deep How deep this goes With lots of radio friendly tracks you could only hope that some stations would pick them up. With songs full of hope and spirituality, Awake! Awake! holds heaps of promise musically, lyrically and with great vocals, I hope they can gain a greater audience and keep creating the stuff they do. 1 Liner: Awake! Awake! – Bittersweet Horizon This band, and consoquently the new album, is truly an mash up and outpouring of their musical influences ranging from The Police to Jimmy Eat World to MuteMath. With music and vocals both as likable as possible, ‘Bittersweet Horizon’ really is that charismatic person you meet for the first time, but instantly have known for years in only a matter of moments. After 12 songs the only issue is that the songs begin to blend together, though, with the quality being what it is, there could be worse problems. Release Date: 7/1/10 Listen to Awake! Awake! It is a solid follow-up to their debut, We’ve Been Strangers, and their second release without label backing. Sophomore albums can really tell you a lot about a band; sometimes they deflate all of the momentum created by a debut record and sometimes they justify all of the hard work and praise received. Bittersweet Horizon is a testament to the band’s maturity; with their new wave sound and a do-it-yourself effort Awake! Awake! have produced another solid release. The album starts off with energy, tracks like “Distance” and “Firing Squad” capture your attention. You can’t help but start to move with the beat on “Distance”, and with catchy choruses you’ll be singing along in no time. Also early in the first track is the presence of synth, a sound that is present throughout the record and really adds an another element to Awake! Awake!‘s already solid sound. “Firing Squad” leads off with some crowd vocals before falling into an upbeat, toe-tapping pace. The pop quality on this record is really apparent; these songs could appeal to fans across many genres, finding themselves on radio or indie homes like Paste Magazine. There are some outstanding tracks on the album that really showcase Andrew’s ability to craft a song. The melody lines throughout the album are great, so interesting and catchy. David’s voice is unique and usually full of confidence. There are a few moments when the vocals are swallowed up by the full sound of the band, something that is probably the result of limited resources available to the band. The album was recorded and produced by the band in a home studio. This makes their music much more than simply songs, they are telling a story. These songs are full of passion and heart; the lyrics feature honesty and vulnerability when asking life’s tough questions. Awake! Awake! consider themselves a faith-based band, and although most of their lyrics are veiled and ambiguous, you can see elements of their faith in songs like “Nemesis” and “Red”. “Nemesis” discusses powerful misleading tactics of Satan, posing as God; “I’m begging you please don’t believe me blindly. Time after time fear loves to hide behind absolutes.” In “Red” the honesty is palpable, confessing “We’ve chased such counterfeit crowns.” The lyrics are really impressive throughout, and while they were obviously crafted from the band’s personal stories, there is enough room for the listener to apply them to their own life. Throughout Bittersweet Horizon there is a contrast between upbeat, pop songs and serious, intentional songs. Some tracks are simple in layout, yet feature enough complexity that they avoid becoming “filler” on the album. The songs all feature a wet feel; full of ambience and reverb. Fans of 30 Seconds to Mars, the Killers, or even bands like Jimmy Eat World and U2 will enjoy Awake! Awake! OVERALL: Bittersweet Horizon is a solid release, the songwriting is very good throughout the record. The songs are catchy and the melodies are great to sing along with. The overall production of the album is a little raw, absent of that over-produced sound that keeps a lot of us away from the mainstream bands. This is hard-working music from a hard-working band, good energetic music for any occasion.
